Sunny
Total Time = 1h 24m 22s
Overall Rank = 8/79
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/12
Pre-race routine:

Arrived early and relaxed in my truck with my eyes shut.
Event warmup:

Jog, stretch, faster jog and a couple small sprints and plyo's and another stretch. When allowed into the water to warm up, swam maybe 50m just to loosen up.
Swim
  • 14m 55s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swim was fantastic. Low winds = low chop which is almost a first for Joe Pool Lake. I started near the very front and maintained that position almost the whole way. I think I passed 1 or 2 people and I was passed in the last 200m by 1 or 2 people.
What would you do differently?:

Legs were cramping a little already (still haven't figured out why my legs are cramping when swimming lately), so I made sure to take it just a little easy at first while my legs got acclimated.
Transition 1

What would you do differently?:

Wipe feet off so that rocks don't enter my shoes with my feet.
Bike
  • 44m 20s
  • 15.5 miles
  • 20.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I took Dylan's water bottle with water instead of mine with gatorade. I think this may have only had a small pyschological impact. Felt great on the bike except for some minor calf cramping that I tried stretching out while coasting. Caught up to 2 guys in my AG and passed them with about 4 miles to go. So that gave me a little boost of confidence.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

I unvelcroed my shoes thinking I was going to leave the shoes clipped in and just take my feet out, but when I got to the dismount line I forgot that and went into auto-pilot and unclipped. I was supposed to try and be saving time, but I dont' know that I lost any time doing it this way. First time I thought to try it, and I guess my brain was a little fuzzy.
What would you do differently?:

Practice leaving shoes clipped in and dismounting with just my bare feet.
Run
  • 22m 29s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Running out of T2 I could already feel my quads and calves wanting to cramp. I also saw that the 2 guys in my AG that I had just passed on the bike were getting into their running gear, so I tried hard to run fast enough to stay ahead of them but slow enough where my legs weren't going to lock up on me. About half way through the run I took a wrong turn because the course wasn't marked well. I didn't stray for too long before a volunteer told me to go back. By that time, both of my AG rivals had passed me by about 100 feet. I quickly caught up with one and stayed in front of him the rest of the race, but the other guy was just too fast. He probably would have passed me anyway. I felt a little extra gassed after going the wrong way and getting mad.
What would you do differently?:

Know the course better. This has gotten me into trouble in the past.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch and eat

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Leg cramps

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
