Not overly bothered just wanted to see people's opinions I just think it's rude politeness costs nothing. Like the above mentioned. .... karma

I've noticed when i am out riding by myself I am often really in my own world (just paying attention to my side of the road and traffic) that often I do not even see the other cyclists ... not trying to be rude, just in my own world.  I some times wave, I sometimes don't.

I kind of thought the same thing about road bikers and some really are rude (like many other groups- they exist in all of them) but then my own experience just made me guess that sometimes they are just not paying that much attention to everyone else. Hopefully, to the road and such but not bikes going the other way.

I think that might be the key.

You think it's rude. Some have pointed out reasons why people might not wave (legimately), and not see it as rude.

I'm not sure it's always (or even usually) rudeness, more just people who maybe don't see the world exactly as you do, no?

Either way, you have made your POV clear.

Coercion I tell you!

if what the people around you do ruins your workout, you're doing it wrong.

most likely they're just hoping they can get the triathlete to keep both hands on the bars, safer for everyone.

Off topic, but as cyclists makes sure you wave to any vehicles ceding the right of way etc.. That's far more important than waving to other cyclists. A little good will goes a long way in getting roads safer for us!

Excellent point. I always try to acknowledge the kind folks in vehicles.

The waving thread of the month:
http://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/968416-what-fellow-road-bike...

If you read that, you'll soon realize that it is part of the road bike culture to not wave. Some will go against the grain, but those that are trying too hard to be a hard man will not wave on a bike even though they would anywhere else in life. Don't worry about it, some of those people are still really good people and not snobs, they are just trying to fit in.

Man! The bike forum posts were much more lively than ours (except Left Brain's, of course!). Some of the banter there was hysterical. Glad I read it because it pokes some much deserved fun at the I-want-a-wave-back riders of the world. . . like I am . . .No! Like I used to be, before reading those posts! I now solemnly swear not to wave unless waved to. Wow! That felt liberating. (I still expect a response from you runners, though, when I'm running. I'll give you a pass if we see each other doing laps at the pool, though). Whatever!

Once while riding on a MUP, I offered up a fist bump to another cyclist heading the other way.  That didn't end well.

I lived in NYC for about 8 years and did all my miles in Central Park (I only ran then). You physical couldn't wave to everyone; there were just too many people, but the "runners hi" was something I really missed. Now that I moved, I wave to everybody; walkers, runners, bikers, stoners and old people on those big tricycles (tons of them in the Keys), crawlers, people holding signs, whatever. Some wave, most don't, but whatever...I'm still gonna wave like an idiot.

I lived in Ft. Lauderdale for a short bit and I'd run along the A1A which is the road along the beaches, through an area with a lot of older people (who would have thought, right?) and I ended up getting to know a lot of them through my stupid waving. There was one guy that was the typical grumpy old man and I saw him every morning. Every morning I'd wave and say good morning and every morning he'd just sort of glare at me and keep walking. Well after about a month, he'd start to sort of tip his hand up...like he was going to wave but not have anyone see. After another month or so he'd start waving, but didn't look happy about it. Then after a couple more months the dude was cheerily saying good morning back. I don't know what his story was, but I'm happy I did it.

Every group has d-bags...it's just the way of life, just don't let them turn you into a d-bag too.

I always wave. Often I don't even look to see if they wave back. Whether I wave is my choice. Whether they wave is theirs and it doesn't affect what I do.

I rarely wave. I'll acknowledge another rider with a nod of the head or a slight movement of the hand on the hoods. I ignore anyone who is riding without a helmet and most leisure riders. About the only time I'll take my hands of the bars to wave is I'm on an isolated road in the middle of nowhere and I happen to pass another rider (so long as he's wearing a helmet).

But I always will return a wave unless I'm riding hard or they're not wearing a helmet (I honestly have no clue why I feel that way about people who don't wear them).

If someone on a bike smiles back and waves: Triathlete.
If they don't: Cyclist.

99.9% of runners wave and smile. The ones that don't are at the end of their long run.

They may be snobs, but around here, the roads are kinda tough to ride. Full concentration is required.
