Subject: Carbon seat post worth the $$$
Hi,

I have this basic alloy seatpost on my tri bike. It has served me well and I can't complain about it. I did have butt pain on really long rides (60 miles +) but that seems normal. Anyway, I want to buy a second one for easier swapping of saddles. I have a sprint tri racing saddle and a longer ride saddle, and it's a pain to swap them out, so was thinking another seatpost would be good.

Any compelling reason to not just buy the same thing that has been working for me (and is pretty cheap)? Would carbon really be notably different?

Thanks!

This is the one I have already:

I've never noticed a difference between carbon and aluminum seatposts.

Saddle/cham and tires are what is going to make up the biggest part of your comfort.

I would go with the aluminum seatpost. I accidentally cracked a carbon post without even knowing it, but never aluminum. Do you want to have a failure during a race?

As Chris and 6k pointed out, a seat point won't make a difference. Pain is commonly a bike fit issue though, so that's where I would start. After you have that ironed out, then look at the saddle, but don't start there… it can be expensive in a hurry (not to mention that you'll end up with a box of almost unused saddles…)

I have a Specialized Allez Elite road bike with aero bars. It has the stock seatpost. I am interested in changing the seat post to one that is more forward. What would I look for?
