All the swim splits both days were long. I think part of it was that they moved the timing mat from on the beach to after the little showers in transition (my T1 was 30 seconds shorter than usual...so that 30 seconds got added to the swim). Also there has been a lot of beach erosion recently, so I think both courses were longer in the water than normal. I've dropped my swim split every year for six years and this year I had my slowest EVER, five minutes slower than last year, even though I had my highest placement ever for the swim this year. So it was the course more than anything.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
