My long term 3+ year goal is to complete an ironman event.

I've done one 70.3 event and various marathons, century rides, olympic and sprint distance etc.

Is it worth putting in my entry this year to start to accumulate my chances of getting a spot via the lottery? I've heard of lots of people waiting 10+ years to get a successful entry so thought it might be best to start to accumulate entries now so come 10 years time I'll have 10 entries in the draw instead of one so my chances would be better.

Thoughts?

No, you need to wait at least another year until I get in.

Seriously, I've been putting in for the last four or five years with each year being a passport entry so I get two per year.  Just remember they have to be consecutive years or you start again at zero.

And good luck.

As long as you are prepared to do the event (physically and financially), put in for the lottery as many times as you want.  Just don't be surprised if you get picked on your first or second try.  If there is anything that I would find unacceptable about the lottery process is that if you get selected, you turn it down for reasons other than injury or unforseen circumstances.  IOW, if you put your name in...be ready to accept the spot because they don't have a wait list or redraw if you decline.

Good point.  For me, it keeps me motivated to keep enough fitness over the Winter that if I need to ramp up after the drawing I am not starting at scratch with training.

Also keep in mind that you have to do another WTC IM or 70.3 in the same year to validate your spot.  Physically and financially you need to be able to handle this.  If you wait until after the drawing some of the races that may be closer to you or more appealing may have sold out.

I can't say it enough, the feeling of treading water for that final minute, helicopters over head, Mike Riley's Iron-voice over the P.A. - just awesome. I cannot believe I'm here!

Well the day is finally here. I don't believe a single workout has gone by in these past 9 years where the idea of being at the start line of the Ironman Hawaii didn't creep into my head.

So far the taper is feeling good and I'm getting that itchy feeling to race. I know this will grow even stronger when I get to the island and see my friends and PBN Team members.
