With the 2015 bikes coming out, I am looking to pick up my first tri bike. What kind of savings would you consider to be good for an end of the season sale? One shop I visited was taking 10% off their Felt bikes while another was taking 25% off Quintanna Roo bikes. I'm wondering where the sweet spot is to jump in while they still have my size & I would be getting the best deal.

10% is too little in my opinion.  This is the time of year when you as the buyer are in the drivers seat as these guys are already putting down deposits for next years models.  You should shop around as you'll get some shops getting down close to cost within the next couple of months.

I think 25 percent is a good number. At this point, 10 percent is far too low.

Really depends on the shop. Bigger shop is going to be more interested in flipping inventory and will give better discounts.

Smaller shops aren't as keen on getting rid of stuff cheap just so they can order more stuff that will sit around for a year.

So many variables. I got VERY lucky a month ago. Was able to get a 2013 new, Trek Madone 5.2 (road bike) for over 35% off. It's a 013, so about to be 2 model years old. 10 speed instead of 11. The shop owner said that the Madone used to be his big seller, but everyone now wants Domanes. I prefer the Madone, and the 10 speed X2 was plenty for me, so a great deal.

I don't know anything about this dealer, but he advertises right here in the classifieds and has some really nice looking machines at what look like great prices. IF I was in the market right now, I would certainly check him out:

So many variables from Manufacturer, Model, and even size of the bike plus size of the shop / competitor is in the area. A 54 or 56 isn't going to sit around for very long

Ballpark 10-20% is very likely.

High end bikes don't have as high margins as people think.  I get my bikes at cost so I know exactly how much the markup is on the bikes I have bought... about 30% on bikes in the $8000-$10,000 range.  I'm sure that varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer but I would think 25% to 35% markup is standard.   I would guess the margin % is even less on less expensive bikes.

So the bike shop is probably making zero money on a bike discounted 25% but they're at least moving out old inventory and hopefully counting on making some money off accessories and service.

I love my local bike shop. They have given me some screaming deals on bike stuff in the past and conversely I have paid close to full price on things that I know I could have gotten cheaper elsewhere. It is worth it to me to pay just a little more to ensure that I have the shop that I have a relationship with around for the long term.

Years ago I went to them for a high ticket item and explained exactly what I wanted and how much I could get it for online. Then told them I was willing to pay (a little) more in order to buy it from them in exchange for great service. We agreed on a price and they helped me set everything up exactly like I wanted it. I have purchased more big ticket items from them in the interim so we are both benefiting.

I have to say that it is very nice to have my bike miraculously go to the front of the line in the service department every time I walk in. (Of course the occasional six pack I bring in for the mechanics probably helps....)

Long way of saying that the % off is important, but in the long run, for me anyway, the relationship with the shop has been worth a couple extra dollars.

I agree that there are a lot of variables involved.

Bike size, model, available inventory space of the LBS, popularity of certain bikes, and whether or not certain bikes have been redesigned or spec'd differently in the newer models.

There was a good 4-5 year stretch where the Cervelo P2 and P3 were the exact same bike...year after year.  Seriously...the only major difference between a brand new 2008 P2 Ultegra and a 2012 P2 Ultegra was paint.  But now the new P2 and P3's have redesigned frames, and now come with 11 speed thus a bigger difference in what you get.

A bike shop will sell their bikes to maximize profits and keep inventory control.  If they feel that a 2014 bike will sell quickly at a 10% discount, then that's what they'll sell it for.  Or if maybe their 2015 shipment of bikes are late, or have already sold out, there is less of a reason to blow out their 2014 stuff.  On the other hand, if a LBS brings in a crap load of 2015 bikes, which they don't have room for...it may be in their best interest to blow out their 2014 bikes even if they don't make any money on them.  The inventory and floor space might make it worth their while.  It isn't the same for every store.

^^THIS!

We never wait for anything when we need help with a bike. I've even watched them take parts off a floor bike when we needed something that they would have to order......BUT....we volunteer when they have events, my kids belong to the store's team, and we buy EVERYTHING from them....even if it's crazy more expensive than I can get online, we work it out.  I have a 6 year relationship with that shop, since the day they opened their doors...I value it as much as any relationship I have with anyone.  And yeah.....I've bought gift cards for the mechanics, brought them pizzas, beer, whatever I can do.  We travel A LOT for racing......I need them, and they have always been there.  They have started to sponsor Jr. and next summer he will work there learning to build bikes.......it's all because we are loyal to them and have cultivated a mutual relationship.  You need your LBS if you race a lot....money be damned, but it's give and take.

It depends... If there's no difference between the 2014 and 2015 then 10% is ok. If there's major changes to the 2015, I would expect slight steeper discount

Those who spoke to the virtues of the relationship they had with their LBS had it right. My coach introduced me to his LBS which is more of a maintenance & repair shop than a retailer. They are a small but well known outfit. Well, the timing worked out perfectly with my search because they just became a retailer for Blue bikes. I ended up buying a brand new 2015 Blue Triad EX Di2 at a 28% discount off MSRP. In the end, I got the bike I wanted at a price better than I expected and I have money left to put towards a new set of wheels & a power meter which will undoubtedly be bought from & installed by the same shop.

Really glad for the feedback. Like I said earlier, the relationship with the shop is worth occasionally paying a little extra. Fortunately for you, you got the relationship and the deal.

Last year I was prepared to buy a fairly intro level cross bike from my shop. I didn't love the bike but didn't want to pay too much. They saw I was waffling a little bit (I have become a bit of a bike snob). The owner says to me, "I have a 2013 carbon Crux with 105 components. Any interest in that bike?". Yes. I was definitely interested. When he offered it to me at 33% off retail I was even more interested. Without our pre existing relationship I doubt I would have walked out with that bike (which I absolutely love).

10% is a joke.  typically its 20-30% in my experience.  right now most of the LBS for me are shutting down and liquidating their inventory... i've been told the bikes are going for cost to the store +$15, i'll be stopping by later today to check that out.

I got 30% off mine when I bought my Giant TCR in Late October that was an excellent deal. anything between 20 and 25 would be a good deal. they also as a total surprise gave me 30% off anything I bought on the day when I went to pick it up and get fit, thus I bought , peddles , shoes, cleats , trainer ,trainer tire, aero bars, jerseys, all in all I think spent the 30% I saved on the bike that day on accessories maybe a bit more LOL. So it was hard to tell who came out ahead . But I did end up with everything I would need for the bike and for training for the next couple of years and then I only upgraded the saddle.

I just bought my first CF bike last week from my LBS. I think they lost the Trek franchise to a competing store in town, so they are getting rid of the Treks they have in stock. I bought a Trek Madone 3.1 for $1299. The original list was $2200, I think I did well.
