928 | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED It looks like the swim cam is off now, but there are lots of posts on twitter. Search #ironmanlaketahoe. The race was cancelled because of poor air quality (smoke from forest fires). Sucks for all those who have trained and were ready to go, but we can only assume the organizers felt they had no choice, given the situation. eta: looks like they cancelled it just minutes before the swim start-- with everyone literally suited up and ready to go in the water. Master 2005 South Florida | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED It is a shame...all the preparation and cost to get there. I wonder what happens now? Do they get any sort of compensation / entry or discount to another?? |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED Races get cancelled, it happens. I know last year as I was training for Tahoe there was also a question of whether the race would go on with the wildfires/smoke in the area. Of course the race went off in freezing morning temps and I missed it anyway with knee surgery. I'd say there are quite a few things in life that can devastate you.....missing a race shouldn't be one of them. Still, sorry for the folks who didn't get to race....I spend a bit of time out there every year at a family member's home.....what a fabulous place to race. |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED I was there. It was 6:30am and I was in the water warming up and the pros were about to start. Then they made the call. The race was over. The other days it was clear in the morning and the smoke moved in late afternoon. But, I was up at 3:50am and Squaw Valley was completely filled with smoke. It was smoky all night. In my heart I knew we were just going through the motions by getting on the bus and heading to King's Beach. The air quality was in the "hazardous" zone and the race was called. Like was said before, I think the decision was out of the RD hands. I only drove 3150km to get to the race. I was talking with people from Mexico, Germany and England in T1. There were many people walking around crying. They are sending out an official email on Tuesday with what I believe will be an official explanation of why they cancelled. We won't get refunds, it is right in the waver we sign that races can and will be cancelled. |

Extreme Veteran 608 Iceland | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED One of my triathlon clubmates from Iceland is there with his whole family. The whole trip cost him 10.000$..... not speaking of all the training time her put in... it sure sucks. Even a compensation or another race entry wouldn´t help him much as the travel costs are sooo high. But I guess thats what can happen and I am sure they made the right decision health wise! |

643 | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED That sucks. A guy and I were talking about this before a race this morning. As bad as it sounds, it's a good thing it got canceled but I would be super pissed. Yeah a first world problem, blah blah blah but come on! IM training is about a year in the making plus the travel costs. An IM is just a race where you can skip it and go on like a sprint/oly tri. Normally only have one a year so it like putting all of your eggs in one basket. This is one thing I was worried about a lot this year. I only did 3 tris up to and including my IM. After my IM I thought about how risky that was and I'm trying to plan my next year's schedule to have more oly and HIMs in there so I can at least say I did those if something happens to the race or if I get sick/injured. I feel sorry to the people but you will not get a refund. WTC paid for all the fees, permits, people, and other expenses and they aren't going to eat that cost if they don't have to. Whether that's right or wrong....up for you to decide. Now if Garmin was in charge of the race...the refund situation would definitely be different! 128 | Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED I know someone up there doing it he just did the whole race on his own in 10:29, his brother and father just drove sag for him for support and his wife did the 70.3 on her own with the sag. This is what I would have done, difficulty level way raised no support or crowds but your there you planned to race anyways just go for it. I am going to do this someday with our old full ironman course in Saint George that went down to the half and just use gas stations as aid stations as I am bummed I never got to do the full course. You don't need WTC to be an ironman. |

Subject: RE: Lake Tahoe CANCELLED Sorry as I know it's your friend, but I guess you don't need brains either. Doing a full IM when the health dept has declared those conditions is just stupid. Just my .02 |

Doing a full IM when the health dept has declared those conditions is just stupid. Just my .02 Agreed. I too was pulled out of the water due to the cancellation. My rented condo didn't have AC so I slept with the windows open the night before the race... my lungs ached when I woke up. Visibility on most of the bike course was less than a mile. I won't sacrifice my health for my ego. Live to race another day. |
