Sorry but I had to type this. I managed to PR today in a marathon, 2 weeks after IMWI. I PR'ed by ~3 minutes and managed to slide in at 3:21:30. I was feeling pretty good and decided to sign up 3 days before the race. I had no idea what to expect with doing an IM 2 weeks ago and only running 3 times in the past 2 weeks but I managed to pull through. My HR was all over and was in Z3-Z4 the entire time. Shows my heart still has not recouped yet but I went by perceived effort and thought I was doing ok when I was running with people taking 2x as many breaths as me. I was feeling great until the 1/2 point and then my right ankle hurt like hell. After limping on my left leg for 9 miles, the pain went away but by then I was just done and I was about 1 min/mile slower than before at the same HR. Marathon only had 2 aid stations with heed (new to me...guess it's Hammer's drink), so I lived off water and GUs and my 1,000 calorie breakfast to keep me going. Just goes to show that you can still race after an IM

Still hoping one day I can BQ (sub 3:05). Thinking if I work my butt off, I might be able to get it next year with proper marathon training. Again sorry for brag thread but pretty psyched I managed to PR a marathon 2 weeks after an IM.

That's a solid time - congrats.

I suspect you can indeed get the BQ if you ran a 3:21 off ironman training - you will probably have to do a dedicated 14 -18 wk marathon-only focus block to get your time down to that level, but you'll def see big gains from all-run focus at 55+mpw.

That is amazing and fantastic, well done! Based on what you said, I would agree that with a focus on just training for the marathon you could definitely go under 3:05.

Way to go! A PR is a great achievement any time, but just a few weeks after doing an IM is just awesome.

Nice job. It took me about 3 weeks after my IM before I was running strong. Hope your recovery goes well!

Congratulations- that's a very respectable time.  Especially 2 weeks after an IM and without focused run training.  If a BQ is your goal- I'm sure you have the potential to get there in a year.

My general advice (not that you asked) is not to think about it as "working your butt off".  Getting to be a good endurance runner is about consistency and volume.  Unlike cycling and swimming; running is MOSTLY EASY.  Don't 'work your butt off'.  instead- fall in love with running.

enjoy your journey.  If you don't BQ next year, then BQ the year after.  The longer it takes you, the bigger the emotional reward when you get there.

Great work and congrats on a solid Ironman and Marathon. (Followup races are very cool)

As for the BQ, you will get there; just gonna take some time and focused effort and you will make it.

Be sure to aim for an extra cushion beyond the 3:05 as the folks who just meet there BQ time rarely get in any more. If you can beat it by 5 minutes, you get to register early and are much more likely to get in.

The journey is well worth it IMHO. Boston is a spectacle well worth the time and effort.

Nice work!
If it was me...I'd take some more time easy (to recover from both events!) and then do a mini build and find another marathon. You PR'ed 2 weeks off an IM, were limping 9 miles and had crazy HR. I bet your healthy actual marathon fitness is another 5+ minutes under! That'll give you a much better notion of what amount of training it'll take to hit that 3:05 BQ time.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I I plan to go into maintenance mode in 1-2 week and then work back up on volume and intensity. I don't feel that great today, that's for sure! I felt 100% fine after my IM but not after this marathon. I got maybe 4-5 hours of constant interrupted sleep last night to where I was exhausted but I couldn't sleep (and only 4 hours before the race). Mind was racing and I can tell my heart isn't feeling great right now. I plan to have an actual 1-2 week recovery period and then get back at it.

I plan to do an early May marathon but I also have a HIM a month afterwards, so I'll need to adjust my plans a little. I plan to run a lot to build a good base this winter...but I also plan to bike a lot and hopefully get my biking to the next level A little hard to tell what I should focus on I would like to get 3:00 for the marathon to hopefully guarantee a spot but I'll put in the hours and hope for the best.

I can't say it enough, the feeling of treading water for that final minute, helicopters over head, Mike Riley's Iron-voice over the P.A. - just awesome. I cannot believe I'm here!
