44 | Subject: Off season training & goals I reached the end of the season yesterday and have to admit I am feeling a bit lost without a plan and goal! Any suggestions for the off-season that will keep me from gaining 20 #s?? Thanks. |

Veteran 486 Newcastle, England | Subject: RE: Off season training & goals I've written down (most of) my training plan for next year ... and in the first tab there are a list goals for where I feel I need to be when I start the plan ... ... so my motivation over the off season is to arrive at the start of my 20wk IM plan with those goals achieved ... therefore hopefully giving me the start i need

My tactic has become to lose weight in the early fall, then my weakness for baked goods (ooh, are those cookies?) merely results in reequilibrium. I set up the bike trainer and spend a few hours a week on that. I also strength train in the winter. Having an early spring goal helps me stay on track, but I don't have one for this year. Lately though, I have just been in the mood to run a lot. Then again, if we get a snowy winter like we did last year, I will buy some XC skis. |

Member 2689 Denver, CO | Subject: RE: Off season training & goals I'm doing a 3-run du series in Dec., Jan., and Feb., and a HM in March. I'll probably do a 10k around Thanksgiving, then start the HM training in earnest. Also going to throw in a bike and a swim each week to keep things interesting. |

467 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Off season training & goals I'm very lucky as we'll be heading south to FL in about two months. Instead of needing to fight the cold, I'll be able to walk/run the beaches, ride a lot of bike, and OWS on a regular basis. I will also work hard at the pool at least 3-4 days a week. And I definitely plan on sticking with Yoga which I've been doing less than a month and has really helped my back. For the next two months of cooling WI weather I plan on hiking quite a bit and riding when it's warm enough. I'm kind of looking at the time until we get to FL as my off season, do what I want season. |

This year I've scheduled a March marathon. Bonus points for feeling self-righteous when you're the only one running at the park on a snowy Saturday in January! I also agree with focusing on your weakness during the off-season. Just so happens my run is my weakness, so it works out. |

This! 90% of the people here would benefit greatly from a swim focused offseason, don't forget to work on your kick either! Agree with this completely. Also like to add that most people say "It's only 10% of the race, blah, blah, blah" But that is short-sighted thinking and thinking triathlon is 3 different events. Unfortunately, triathlon is one event and the swim carries over. Even if you only gain say a 1-2 minute improvement on your HIM swim time, if you can come out of the water more fresh, then you can bike/run closing to your ability and potential. I think this is an often overlooked part. The big caveat with swimming in the off-season is time. both on the athletes end, and the pools as well. School swim teams are swimming more, winter brings more swim programs. etc. so pool time can be less for some. Also add in commutes, changing, etc and for some that increase in a swim focus is much more difficult then say someone like me that has never lived more then 3 miles away from a pool. |
