Subject: RE: Crazy question 17 hours is a long time to complete an IM...even if you walk most of the marathon. Believe me...I know. |

Of course we know. For sure it's a tough race. Lots of people say it's just as challenging as an IM. But with 2 weeks to recover, and a 17 hour time limit, I don't see why it "can't" be done. You might suffer a bit, walk the marathon a little more than you would otherwise...but hardly the point where I would say you can't do it assuming no major injuries occur. |

Mike, I believe you're asking that question of someone (Fred) who has a brick. BTW, I also feel you'd be fine with what you propose. ETA - I'll probably fire some people up by saying this, but Savageman really isn't that big of a deal if you train properly and pace properly. Do that, and it's less challenging physically than an IM.

Funny, I think that pretty much ANYONE can finish an IM with training and pacing. But not everyone can finish and Brick Savageman. My wife is evidence of this. (Honey, I hope that you are not reading my posts on BT). |

(Honey, I hope that you are not reading my posts on BT). If this is your evidence, that's pretty unconvincing support for your first statement. There are lots of people that train for other ironman races every year that don't finish. They don't like to be told that "everyone" can finish, either. Edited by jennifer_runs 2014-09-23 10:17 PM |

But not everyone can finish and Brick Savageman. My wife is evidence of this. (Honey, I hope that you are not reading my posts on BT). If Scott Rigsby can finish an Ironman, anyone can. As I said, with training and pacing. Instead of pacing, perhaps I should have said "a solid plan and solid execution". I completed IM CdA in 12:43. Put me well into the top half of the field. I went in confident that I would finish and never felt desperate. Two years later, I completed SM 70.0 in 7:29. 205/318. There were at least 4 times that I was at a real risk of not finishing, including with 1/2 mile to go when I thought that my insides were going to become outsides. And there is a difference between EVERYONE and ANYONE. My wife finished Ironman AZ in 16:42. Her plan was 16:40 with a briskly walked marathon. She has a demanding job, and barely did the minimum training. Only one ride over 90 miles and her longest run was 8. When we go out to Western Maryland, she just laughs. I can't get her out of the SAG Wagon to even try any of the climbs. Edited by pga_mike 2014-09-24 6:36 AM |

Have a brick and a podium finish at Savageman, but what do I know ;-) I do agree, that for a weaker cyclist, that Savageman probably is harder to finish then an IM, but both can be tough for anyone. Also, things go wrong, even with the best preparation... so not finishing an IM, or barely making it is nothing to be making fun of at all. You people saying that it can be as hard as an IM are not helping. I have done the Savageman 30 and the Garrett County Gran Fondo for the last two years, and was planning on making the jump to the 70 next year. I live in the area, and I have friends who say they will train with me, but you guys are starting to make it sound scary. I am actually more concerned about the run than the bike. |
