Subject: Massage 3 weeks before IM
I am going on a romantic getaway for my wedding anniversary October 9-12 and doing IMFL November 1. I have not had any massages throughout my training (not part of my regular routine due to my schedule with kids, etc.), but I do use the foam roller and a Theracane regularly (3-4 times per week) for deep tissue massaging. I have, in the past, been a bit sick to my stomach and tired for a couple of days after a deep tissue massage, but typically recover well after that. My concern is the possibility of irritating past or current injuries (that may not be bothering me). Any thoughts on this? Would you recommend or avoid based on experience? I will be running on this trip but won't be able to swim or bike so training will be lighter. I will
hit my training hard again on Monday afternoon (Oct. 13).

Thanks.

???? I'm missing something here.....Is a deep tissue massage a planned part of your romantic getaway? (I can't think of anything romantic about it at all. Every time I've had deep tissue massage, I've left feeling like I've just given birth to full-term triplets and full of homicidal thoughts toward the therapist! ) Most resort-type spas don't do real deep tissue anyway; at most a pleasant kneading. (Unless the getaway happens to be to Thailand.....) I think you'd be fine three weeks out unless you have any really touchy areas. The most painful deep tissue I ever had took me maybe four or five days to get feeling back to normal, and that was breaking up several years worth of scar tissue. If in doubt, just let the therapist know you've got an event coming up, and ask him/ her to go a bit easier on you. If there are any areas you're concerned about , let the therapist know in advance,

If this getaway involves another country, I'd be a bit more cautious as communication with the therapist could be difficult. For this reason I usually avoid getting a massage from anyone but a very familiar therapist within a month or so of an event when here in Vietnam.

a standard hotel/resort swedish massage should not put you in hurt for a few days.  also, ask the therapist to use lighter pressure than you normally would.  i think you should be fine - just hydrate well before and after and enjoy your vacation!

I think you're over thinking this.

Won't be deep tissue at all. Basic massage only. Sounds like it should be fine. I have trained too hard this season not to overthink it a bit. Spent a lot of money and have 3 little kids so I am not willing to do anything crazy to stir things up.

You will be fine. I try and get DT massages about 4 days out before my A races. I feel like a new man after I've "healed" from them. 3 weeks out is a should be a non issue for a standard massage. But like others have said, nothing romantic about a DT massage... they hurt!!! Just get a nice swedish massage and ENJOY the time and congratulations on the anniversary!!!!!!

I got a sports massage (not deep tissue though) 2 weeks before IM Barcelona last weekend. It felt great after it, my taper went fantastic, and the race was awesome.

Enjoy it!!

I had a deep tissue about 1.5 weeks before my IMFL and it was amazing. While there is no real scientific study to back it up, but most massage therapist suggest drinking lots of water after a massage. I did this and didn't have any negative feeling.

I've rested them for 6 weeks, twice. I've had Active Release Therapy, massages, I'm doing Trigger Point, and stretching. Yet, I'm still having issues and can't get above 3 miles.

I have had chronic Achilles tendonitis problems for a good portion of my life. I am wondering if this can ever go away, or if there is a surgery that can be done?

They are comfortable, but on longer runs the ball of my foot starts to heat up. I actually had to STOP, take off the shoe, massage my foot. This would help for a while, but the pain usually returned.
