I did a HIM a few weeks ago. It was hot out and I spent the majority of my day sweating and pouring ice and water on myself to stay cool. My shoes were soaked by the end of the race. They didn't fully dry before I threw them in my bag to come home the next day. I washed them, but they still smell like mold and/or mildew. Anything I can do to get rid of the smell (besides bid them farewell and buy a new pair)?

You may want to buy a new pair for this time.

I've found a cheapie box fan left on low and every time you come in from running or cycling leaving your shoes in front of the fan works wonders for not allowing the stinkfoot to collect.

Baking soda will help.

Sometimes I put some baby powder in them in that situation ( or just getting them routinely damp with sweat and rain here in the tropics). Baking soda might also work, but it's hard to find here. Have to admit that a few times I've ended up trashing shoes that got left too long in the bag after a race. (Came home late, too tired to unpack, forgot about them for a few days.....Yuck!)

I've just started using the vinegar trick with my workout gear and it works amazingly well. Give that a shot. Soak them in water plus a half cup of vinegar for about a half hour and then throw them in the washer.

A couple of years ago I peed during the run and definitely felt it running down my leg and into my shoe. While they didn't really have any atypical odor after that event, I never really felt the same way about those shoes again.

Take the inserts out and put everything in direct sunlight for a day and you should be good to go.  I've tried all sorts of things and sunlight always does the trick for me.

rinse them in fresh water, stick them in the sun to dry (insoles out) then pour Gold Bond in them. Trust me on the Gold Bond.

I train in hot weather regularly so always fighting the stink shoe issue. I have always been able to salvage the shoes by pulling out the inserts, let them dry in the sun, then put baby power in the shoe before putting the insert back in and some more on top of the insert.

throwing in the washer with the inserts pulled out, but also in the washer, with a just a cap of bleach also helps.

Haha, I've been guilty of this so many times that you'd swear I should have learned my lesson by now. After doing an international race, I left my bike, race clothes, and pee pee shoes that had been only rinsed quickly in the basement of some people that I met along the way while I traveled around the country for a while. 3 weeks later, I swear there was an ecosystem developing inside that plastic bag...

To the OP, I'm a chronic sufferer of stanky shoes. I actually keep a big jug of vinegar specifically for the stench, and recently I tried water cut with some bleach, but I try to avoid harsh chemicals where I can, so while it worked I'd probably stick with the vinegar. Or maybe you could mix it with the baking soda like other people suggested and make a really lame shoe volcano for your kid's next science fair project
