Subject: NEW: Auto-Workout Transfer to BT Training Log with Garmin Connect

HOW IT WORKS:

This is perhaps the easiest way to get workouts automatically into your BT training log and is much better than our old method.

  • Garmin Express, the newest of Garmin's software, will automatically grab workouts from your device and send them to Garmin Connect.  They will then get sent to BT and your training log will be updated automatically within minutes (ideally) OR
  • Garmin Communicator with the ANT agent will also send workouts to Garmin Connect which then go to BT.  I believe Express will eventually replace Communicator so try Express first.
  • File uploads (TCX, FIT, GPX) to Garmin Connect will send workouts to BT.

WHAT TO DO:

1 - Make sure you have a Garmin Connect Account and Garmin Express (or Communicator) Installed.

*If Garmin Communicator already works fine for you in sending workouts to Garmin Connect, skip to step 2.

2 - In BT, go to Settings--> Training log settings --> Device Upload.  Click on the button to link your accounts.

3 - Any workout manually imported in Garmin Connect (TCX, FIT, GPX) will automatically get sent to BT along with any workouts Garmin Express or Communicator gets from your device.

KEEP IN MIND:

*Manually creating a workout on Garmin Connect will not sync with BT, it HAS to be a manual file upload or from your device via Express or Communicator.

**Workouts get sent to BT and parsed for display within a minute currently.  Though in the future, this may take longer depending on load.

***DUPLICATE WORKOUTS - You 'may get' up to a month of recent data sent to your BT training log creating duplicate workouts for which we have no control over initially.  You will have to delete them which will only take about 5 minutes.  If you wan't older workouts on BT you will have to manually upload the file here.

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS:

-If your system doesn't support Garmin Express, our current, older Communicator method will still work though Express and Communicator cannot co-habitate on your computer...please uninstall Express to continue to use Communicator.  Communicator 'may' be sun-setted by Garmin in the future FWIW.

-If your workouts don't even make it to your Garmin Connect account, then the problem is not with BT at this point, double-check your Garmin software and account settings.  Workouts only get sent to BT if A: you authorize it and B: the workouts made their way to Garmin Connect first.

Please report any issues or questions.

I just posted in the Site Issues forum but thought I'd post here too in case.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=524417

I have a bunch of duplicate entries going back a month in my training log since I connected with Garmin Express.  I looked at a few others that have connected it and they seem to have the same issue.  I deleted a bunch of them when I thought it was something I had done but from August 29th to Sept 11th they are still there.

DUPLICATE WORKOUTS

If those 'old workouts' were on your Garmin device and NOT on Garmin Connect, AND you previously uploaded to BT via communicator or manually added them, they will duplicate. We don't have a check for that and it would only be one time and on an initial connect.

So for those not using this yet, my recommendation is to delete any workouts on your device that are already synced somehow...that way if you DON'T have them on Garmin Connect, they won't duplicate on BT.

This may sound odd but I have resisted "Upgrading" to Garmin Express but when my 910 gets close to my computer the data gets uploaded to BT and Garmin Connect automatically anyway. I didn't upgrade because it had created a problem in the past with uploading to RunningAhead.com. I am running ANT Agent 2.3.4 with Firefox and the Garmin Communicator plug-in on Windows 7 Pro

Are you sure you 'uninstalled' Garmin Express?  To my knowledge this is the only way this can happen.  You can also try delinking your account via 'settings --> training log settings --> Device upload.

I am fairly certain it has been completely removed. My understanding is with Garmin Express installed the data won't transfer to TP or RunningAhead. I am able to upload to TP and RunningAhead just fine. If I do have Garmin Express running as a demon "zombie" somewher, I sure can't find it. I could be wrong. I don't have any complaints, and am happy with how it is working now. My only suggestion would be for people who haven't downloaded Garmin Express and are happy with what they have, to simply link their BT account with Garmin Connect and see if it works. After my last experience with Garmin Express, I am very reluctant to try it again.

Ron - thank you for adding this functionality, it's fantastic to have.  Also as an FYI, if anyone has the ANT Agent (not Garmin Express) installed, the sync also happens.

Thank you for this. An unexpected cool item to note: I linked my Garmin connect to myfitnesspal. Myfitnesspal is linked to runkeeper too. So any workouts logged via runkeeper are zapped to mfp then zapped to Garmin only to end up in the b t log. Pretty nifty!!

I am not able to get this to work. I have tried the instructions provided and I am authorizing the information just not sure what else to do. Basically, the pop up comes across I agree and then I dont see any other status etc.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong. I also have my Garmin Connect open but not sure what else I need to be doing.

Thanks!
Nina

Does any data go to Garmin Connect?

Garmin also seems to be experiencing a time change issue this weekend - not sure if it's resolved yet.

I had issues this weekend with Connect - manual upload worked fine for BT and Strava, while Connect just hung.

However, ever since, my Connect has works and the link to Strava works but the link to BT does not. I have manually uploaded the last few workouts. I just re-authorized BT again, so I will report back after the next workout.

This is a great new feature... Love it!! You guys are awesome. Is there any chance that you would be able to add something like this for those of us that use trainerroad??

TWO NEW UPDATES:

1 - Garmin 'Other Sports' have in the past, come in as 'swims'.  Now they come in as 'Sport: Device Upload where you can then edit the activity.

2 - For those that use a Garmin biking device (or running), you can now easily reasign workouts and all HR/Lap data to another sport.

  • Once a bike, for example, is in your log via Garmin Connect, go to 'edit --> bike' and you will see a 'change type' red button bottom right.  You can then switch it to a run and vice versa.

I'm probably making a simple mistake, but both my Edge 200 and FR10 upload here off my 12 hours, 12 hours earlier than the actual file's time. Any ideas? Thanks!

First, check your 'settings' -->  'location' to make sure your timezone is correct.
