Subject: Half Ironman Training
I am signing up for a Half Ironman in June 2015.
Yes this is crazy as I am a couch potato. Anyone have a specific training plan that I should use to get me to this goal?
No I do not want to do a smaller one. I will be 50 next year and this is my goal.

Thanks
Krista

Hi Krista, welcome to BT and triathlon!

If you can swim, aren't afraid of open water, and have the time and willingness to be very consistent in your training there's no reason you can't.

The training programs here are very good. Start off with picking one for where you are at (don't worry about the distance it's for, you just need to get consistently training at this point), and then you can get yourself to what the recommended starting points are for the half-iron programs here.

The BT plans are very good. But I do recommend a smaller sprint along the way to at least go through the motions of seeing what a TRI is all about etc. Can't replicate doing an actual race with crowds etc.
good luck

What is your current fitness level? Do you have any swim, bike, or run experience?

That will help us guide you in the right direction.

Using a high-volume schedule for many months is not the best tactic. Build speed and skill several months out, and then transition to a high-volume IM plan.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
