Subject: 6 weeks until half marathon - training?
I have been training for olympic distance races all summer (last one done last weekend.) Really I train year round, just harder in the warmer months. Usually 3 swims, 3 bikes and 3 runs a week. My long runs have been around 9 miles and my speed type work has been once every other week. Counting this weekend and race weekend, I have 6 weeks until this half mary. Curious as to what others (who most likely know more than me) would do as far as training for this upcoming race. I typically dial back biking and swimming to twice a week during the winter so I can bump up my running. Thanks in advance!

Not giving us a lot to go on.  You're running three times per week, but what is that mileage?  What is your longest run?

My completely non professional advice would be:

Run at least three times a week, with two medium and a long run. Have the mediums be in the 6 mile range. For the long run, start at your 9 mile distance and add a mile each week. With 6 weeks to go you should be able to get up to HM distance.

If you dial back your bike/swim you can add in a couple short runs on those days. If you want to do speed/tempo work the short days would be the ones for that.

Typically, my long run is around 9 miles. I do some sort of speed work about once every 10 - 14 days. My other runs are normally 6 miles. My question is more of a general one of how to best to transition my training from olympics to this half mary in 6 weeks. So my mileage is typically in the low 20s per week. I can handle more but don't want to build to fast and risk injury.

I am on Week 7 of a 12-week plan and my long run for the week is only 7 miles.  If I were you I would just find a half mary plan and jump in at 6 weeks out - you should be fine.  If I were you I would find one that has the long run at/near 9 miles for this week.  (For reference, I'm doing Hal Higdon Novice which is 3 runs per week plus one optional run which allows plenty of time to bike and swim)

For strictly half marathon training (right now for Vegas in November), I run 4 days a week. Your times and mileage will differ, but the pattern, with examples is:

Monday - Medium 6 miles
Tuesday - Off
Wednesday - Short 4 miles (with some intervals)
Thursday - Short 4 miles (with some intervals)
Friday - Off
Saturday - Long 8 miles
Sunday - Off

Longest run is 10 miles

On a 9 week plan, I can get to a goal time pretty easily.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
