Hi, has anyone used Rowing (indoor) as their off season workout (besides s/b/r)? I have recently starting working with a group and rowing for an hour 3 times a week. We start with a brief warm up, do some drills, and then the main workout-which is usually interval based. Sometimes it's 10 times 300 meters, sometimes its a 6000 meter row. I just rowed a 2000 meter interval all out, which was one of the hardest workouts I've done. We typically row about 7000-8000 meters.

I'm hoping that this will translate into better biking & running?

Thoughts?

I use a little bit of rowing during the winter just to add variety.  It won't translate directly into improved s/b/r.

I just read this interesting article. Especially, Hywel Davies rowing a 100K in 6 hours (youtube video toward the end of the article). Hard to believe that someone could train for an Ironman on 90% rowing-but then again, he is not an average triathlete.

I didnt read the article, and Im not sure if rowing is some miracle exercise for triathlons, but its a great workout, hits arms,shoulders,lats,core,legs...crank that out for an hour and I would think you're also getting a good endurance workout of all those areas. Sounds like a great workout and a great way to change things up.

I did crew in high school, long before I took up triathlon and it was probably the fittest I have every been aside from now, post ironman - we trained 4-5 days a week on the water or in the gym on the ergo's (aka, concept 2) - my muscle mass was lean and power in my legs - I'm looking and doing some of those workouts over the winter, to see how it works with power in my legs come cycling next season

It's a great all-body workout (much like cross country skiing, another off-season alternative).  To the extent you gain improved fitness, it should carry over somewhat into your biking and running (and swimming).  Of course, if your main goal is to improve those sports, you'd gain the most benefit from actually training in those sports.  To the extent you like to change things up, it's not a bad choice for some alternative workouts.  I'd keep running some, though--rowing is non-impact.

In the 1980s, my dad trained for an Olympic-distance triathlon doing only rowing, to prove that rowing was the best workout (yes, I come from a rowing family and also rowed in college).  He managed to finish the triathlon, but was very sore!  I think it is great but you can't master the bike without time in the saddle.  Perfect for off-season though!

Hi Leslie, I completely agree.

Rowing in the off season works for me. I like the variety, and I have been doing some fun interval training with my friends. But, I'll be back out there riding in the spring

Rowed 2000 meters tonight in 7:09 minutes-which was a PR. Good endurance from triathlons but poor power.

I'm hoping to break 7 minutes in January at the C.R.A.S.H Mid Winter Meltdown in Madison, WI.
