I am returning to triathlon training after a very dark and dismal 18 months. To choose my first event for next year I searched for a sprint in VA in May, figuring the water should be warm enough to swim without a wetsuit.

I'll be registering for the Kinetic Sprint at Lake Anna State Park on Nov 1st. Would like to talk with others who have done it or are planning to do it, especially fellow Clydesdales.

I've raced it the past 3 years and was a Clydesdale but now around 200 lbs. Its a great race and I think you'll really enjoy it. The water should definitely be warm enough to swim without a wetsuit. The bike is pretty flat with some short steep hills, the pavement is rough in some areas. The run starts off with a steep hill that "flattens" out but you go up hill for the better part of the first mile and the last mile is downhill.

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding that rough pavement, I have two bicycles to choose from; a Cannondale Synapse (road bike) and a Cannondale Quick CX (flat bar great for dirt trails and Rails To Trails stuff). Which one do you think would be better for those roads?

I'd definitely use the road bike. It is just rough and not as fast as smooth pavement but other than that it really isnt a concern.

I did the Kinetic Sprint a few years ago.  Very well run race.  Beautiful setting.  It was wetsuit legal the year I did it.

Thanks Melanie. So far that's 2+ for the choice. Now it's just a matter of getting my training times down to under 2 hours separately. That 2½ hour deadline makes me nervous. It'll be my first time with a deadline.

I've done the Giant Acorn Sprint which is almost the exact same course - this year I'm also running the Kinetic Sprint and doing the Acorn at the International distance. Agree with previous posters about type of bike and training - one addition: if it's raining on the day of the race I'd make sure you have a set of wet weather tires as the course has a 90 degree turn that is really nasty when it's wet.

I wouldn't worry to much about the time cut off! The race coordinators are very friendly and want everyone to finish. They usually give the extra time to make it to the finish line if you're close.

I did the Kinetic Half last year and Peasant Man (the prior weekend) the year before. I can't imagine being in that water in May without a wetsuit.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
