Hi guys and girls,

A triathlon related question:

Can I still work out when its 92 outside? It's very hot today where I live and am suffering from procrastination.

We are supposed to go out later so I should jump on my bike right now. But is it wise to workout?

Yes and you can train in -20 too. Get a move on.

If you couldn't, nobody in Florida would be able to exercise outdoors for 3/4 of the year

Hehe, it's my first year living in Florida and have been training only for a short while here too.

When I go on my bike, I usually go early in the morning. Today I got up late, I have done my bike riding and running today in the heat (its a beautiful hot day today) and it went OK.

I was a bit slower, but not a lot.

Would a camelback help? (the pouch of water in the backpack)
Personally, 90 is way too much for me for training. I would wait for the night or go swim. It is however quite exceptional here even during summer.

If I didn't train in 90+ weather I wouldn't get much done! Biking isn't as bad as running since you do get a bit of a breeze. Just be sure to adjust the pace accordingly, and take plenty of fluids. I haven't personally found biking n the heat, even in a race, to be that difficult, as long as I stay hydrated. What really sucks is running, especially tempo runs. Our heat is very muggy, there's often no breeze, and it's just impossible for me to cool off if I'm running hard. My only suggestion in that situation is to stay in the shade as much as possible--being out of the sun does make a difference.

If you dislike training in the heat, you could always get a bike trainer and do it indoors. But if most of your racing is in hot conditions then you do need to do some outdoor training to acclimatize.

Great job!  I ran in the afternoon yesterday, even beachside it was very warm (88F per car) but at least there was a sea breeze.  You just need to slow it down and stay hydrated.  My race day is in Clermont next Saturday and am so glad the next fall cold front will be coming through on Tues/Wed.

I notice that I am 1 MPH faster on the bike when it is cooler, and i don't run in the middle of the day. This summer was pretty rainy so I had to run a few times in the rain and I really liked that.

The first year is always the hardest until you acclimatize- depending on where you came from :-)

Training in AZ all through the summer, there isn't much choice but to train outside - I hate the treadmill so you just kind of deal with it and get used to it (to a point).

Most of my run training is done super early in the morning (4:30-5:30am). Any later than that and it is too warm. Occasionally I will do a short 3 mile run around 8 or 9am. Plenty of fluids, planning your running route through shaded areas or by plenty of water fountains (or carry water with you).
Something I found to really help when it's really bad out is to soak my shirt (or wear a rash guard) in cold water, along with my hat/visor. This keeps my core temp down and allows any sort of breeze to keep me cool. This worked for me during some 6 mile runs around 10am when it was over 100 degrees.
Plenty of sunscreen if you are out in the heat of the day! And don't be surprised if you are much slower, but that is normal.

For biking, the heat doesn't really bother me but I will still go out super early. I teach spin classes so all my weekday training is done indoors. Again, plenty of fluids!

Luckily for swimming it doesn't matter and is pretty refreshing to get in the pool when it is super hot out. I always plan my swim training in the heat of the day when I wouldn't be able to do any run/bike.

Good luck and happy training!

Today is another hot day for October. It really is a bit hard to adapt, cause I'm used to be in autumn rainy whether by now.

Also I'm used to complaining about the whether, cause that is what Dutch people do.

Here is Florida people don't complain; even not in the summer with all the showers and moist.

LOL!

I grew up in the snowbelt region of NY, east of Lake Ontario, 200 days of cloudy days per year was average.  When I moved to FL 15 years ago I vowed to never ever ever ever complain about the weather!  Well, there was 2004 with the hurricanes, that did suck for a bit. Oh and Tropical storm Fay in 2008, 26" of rain was more than enough but I went for a MTB ride and checked out the flooding.

The ridiculous amount of rain in the months of Aug and Sept was pretty agitating for me though. Could be the leaky roof that made me grumpy actually.
