The one that fits. Yes, I'm serious. There's nothing worse than a bike that "kind of fits"…

What is "on a budget"? $500 or $5000….

What kind of bike? What kind of riding? For a "first bike," with road riding and some tris, an aluminum frame with carbon forks and minimum Shimano 105 will do nicely. I have a Trek 2200 that has Ultegra, with clip on aero bars. Cost me $1300 ten years ago, and should go for another 10 years. If you are talking a bike to commute in, road ride and do tris, I would look at a cyclocross bike with an extra set of wheels for race tires. If you are looking for a tri bike, I have no good input to give you - others should chime in.

Give a ballpark of what your budget is and what the bike is for or what you'll be mostly using it for. Impossible to answer without more information.

If you're looking at a road bike I got a CAAD 8 with the 105 groupset and its served me well, and it's not a bank breaker. Find a LBS that has a decent selection and try a couple, I went in with my mind set on a Giant but that ended up being the least favored after a test ride.

I'd look at a low end aluminum frame road bike with 105/Rival components.  slap some clip on bars on it and you are good to go.  You could probably go the used route and save a few  hundred too.  first step is to shop around and see what interests you as far as selection in your area, and as everyone is sure to say, make sure the bike is the right size for you.

My 2-cents: buy used.

You can find some really great deals out there if you look around, many with aftermarket upgrades and such and at the end it maybe costs a bit for a tune-up and then you are good to go. If you are ok searching for awhile, you can score good deals esp this time of year. I have bought a couple of bikes this way and both have worked out well and will continue to do this over buying a new bike full price.

Depends on your budget, if it were me here is what would be on my list:
road: cannondale CAAD10
cross: cannondale CAADX or Specialized Crux
TT: trek speed concept

dollar for dollar bikes direct is probably the best for the budget if you are looking for a new bike. But the trade off is that you are comfortable sizing a bike on line (or live in the limited areas where they have retail shops), willing to put a bike together, willing ride a bike that isn't one of the big name brands, I also think that their resale value is less than the other brands.

Have to agree on buying used. As I looked around I stumbled across a 2012 Kona King Zing. Not a bike I ever heard of much less considered. I was able to check one out and got it for half price. It was one month old.

What I did do in advance was talk with a bike fitter about the dimensions a bike should be in to work for me. This one was in the range and I have loved it.

Unless there is some urgency, take your time and look around. There are some really good deals on some really good bikes.

My budget was $300 and I got an old (1994) Trek 2120 and that's what I've been riding. Like others have pointed out look used first and ensure a proper fit.

If you are 6' 2" like I am, you may have to wait a long time to find a used bike that will fit. Nothing wrong with used, but if you are an "odd size," a good local bike shop will have relatively affordable road bikes, and this time of year is a good time to buy.

I am in this boat as well. What helped me was having an idea of what size I would be on certain models by going to a few bike shops and getting their input and sitting on few dif models, and then looking for them online (ie-on this cross bike you should prob ride 58, on this tt an XL, etc)...helped me have the confidence to buy knowing I reduced the chance of being stuck with something that didnt fit. Then it is just searching, waiting, repeat until it aligns.

The only nice thing about being in the 60+cm or XL camp is that when they do come for sale there aren't as many buyers, so maybe prices are a bit softer.

The best beginner bike on any budget is the one you like to ride the most.
