Subject: Favorite races - planning for 2015

I'm thinking about a race schedule for next year and don't have a single thing that I really "must" do.  I feel like I've tried everything.   I am interested in hearing which races you thought were awesome and want to recommend (locally).

I'm personally interested in running races and possible triathlon, if the swim is REALLY short. Seems like every sprint I like is a half mile swim. I'm more interested in 1/4 mile.  But please share any and all favorites as it may help someone else decide.

Btw, Lake Minnetonka Sprint opened up for registration recently. That's a personal favorite.

Also, bike events (not necessarily races).

Here's something fun I did this summer:  http://www.endlesssummertrailrunseries.com/

Boy, is trail running humbling!   I would like to do a few next year and actually be better prepared for them.    I am certain some real trail running like this would make a person a better runner in general.

Hi! You could do the mix and match Hopkins Tri and only swim 100 yards (if they hold it again). Also, I think an IM is still on your
To Do list, right? ;-)

I personally am thinking about doing my first Olympic distance. I'd like to break 2:30. Maple Grove maybe? I will likely do Lake Minnetonka again - at least sign up for it. No other plans other than we are going back to Lake Tahoe for our family trip at the end of July.

Hey Eric, thanks for playing along!

Any Oly would be a great challenge for you.  Although, don't you want something earlier in the year?  That's just so long to wait.

Running race are great. Some of my favorites are:

Get in Gear
Red White and BOOM half (though it can be brutally hot.)
TC10 mile

As for biking, while not an "official" event anymore or technically local, Almanzo down in Spring Valley is always awesome and a nice early season challenge. The Fulton Gran Fondo was fun this year too. I think they are going to do it again next year.

Ooh, thanks for the reminder about the Fulton ride.  I'll need to keep an eye on that.

Another vote for TC 10!

And as far as short swims go, I like both the Waseca Triathlon (put on by Final Stretch: 0.25 mile swim, 14 mile bike, 4.4 mile run [more like 4.2 miles]) and the Lake Marion Triathlon in Lakeville (put on my a Lakeville area swim team: 0.25 mile swim, 21 mile bike, 5K run). I've done both of those 3 times, and I always enjoy them! I might like Lake Marion a bit better, but I'm always looking for a shorter bike and a longer run (like Waseca).

I just signed up for Lake Minnetonka and Buffalo sprint, as I'm doing a "Summer of Sprints" this year after my IMWI this past year. I'll also do LTF MPLS and MG sprints as well. I'm thinking I may do some cycling races if I can get in a little better biking shape (from a sprint/strength standpoint). The Tour de Tonka was fun, and the shorter distances don't have quite as much in the way of hills. Fulton sounds fun and on similar roads. Don't forget the Tuesday Night Time Trials put on by IC3. They moved to Baker Park and have a loop course as opposed to an out and back, now includes Cty 19, 115, and Willow rd, in additiion to 24. (similar to the Gear West Du).

I try to start the year off with the Ironman bike ride, usually 100km route, good way to get miles in by May 1.

Annandale was my first tri ever, 25+ years ago, still my favorite!

Green Lake in Spicer is a great sprint race, 1/4 mile swim 14 mile bike around the lake and 5k run.

cheers

Oh yes, I always forget about Green Lake!   My sister and her family have a house out there and I am always encourage to come and do the race.  Maybe this year.
