ive seen people around with the mdot tattoo on their calves. Do people get them if they do a 70.3 or just a full ironman?

Yes.

Get whatever blows your skirt up. A lot of people make sure it's obvious they did a HIM if that's what they did and wait for a full IM to get the full M-Dot.

But if you want an M-Dot and have only done a sprint, go for it. It's your body. Ignore the holier than thou distractors

I was just curious to see if people got them after a HIM. I think getting a mdot tattoo without having done a ironman is like wearing a finisher shirt without finishing.

What if they volunteer at a lot of ironman events? Is it okay to get the tattoo then?

What if ironman has inspired them to get healthy and start doing triathlon? Is it okay then?

Maybe they just like the logo.

My point being, it doesn't matter and who cares. I've thought about getting an ironman tattoo if I ever do an HIM or IM.

I've seen folks with those kinds of logos tattooed on their neck or face.......it takes more than 4 beers.

I couldn't agree more.

I personally would never get any kind of tattoo anywhere on my body. Just a personal thing.

But, YOU get to choose what you put on yours (and when) and an m - dot tattoo is not really sacred in my opinion.

I do like the Miller Lite idea. Maybe on the side of my neck.....

Do whatever you want. I always thought about getting a tat sometime in my life but it won't be an M-dot one. I'm not of fan of paying money to advertise for a company. I also don't understand people buying shirts with giant logos of companies on them and often pay extra for them. My mind is blown...

This is very much a repeat thread but my favourite comment I've read to date was someone pondering how many people would have an M-dot taft if they had to have their finish time inked alongside it.

I would, and I don't care.  No matter the times (4 different ones). Each was a personal struggle due to injury or weather. I'm not ashamed of any of my times.

I say get what you want, but if you haven't done an IM and you get an M-Dot tattoo, be prepared for a lifetime of "Which IM did you do?" and having to answer with the equivalent of "I got it because I liked the watch a lot."

Ya people get M-Dot tattoos after completing a HIM- usually they're halfway shaded and have a 70.3

All the people who say "I'll NEVER get a tattoo" thank you for your opinion but I don't think it answered the question posed

I don't know anyone who has that tattoo that hasn't done the full IM distance. Personally, if I ever race that distance, I will get some sort of tri tattoo, but it won't be the M-dot, because I am not putting a corporate logo on my body.

The whole "corporate logo" thing comes up a lot as to why someone wouldn't get the M-Dot, but I think that it is more than a corporate logo, its a symbol of something that is personally meaningful to someone.  I view much the same as folks that get a team logo or something similar.  Getting the M-Dot is a badge of honor for many.  A symbol of personal achievement or accomplishment.

I (like everyone on this board) am biased in my opinion, but I put one on my calf a few weeks after finishing my first IM. I personally have no problem with anyone getting an m-dot anywhere they want and for whatever reason they want. However, unless you make it VERY obvious that you did a HIM you will spend a lot of time explaining that you haven't done a full IM.

People that see mine and are familiar with Ironman generally start with "what IM did you do?" People that are not familiar generally start with "what is that?" Once I explain it the next question is usually "which one did you do?" If you don't care about the questions then go for it.

I vowed that I would not do it until I finished a full. For me it is a reminder of the accomplishment of a full. For others it may have a completely different meaning. To each his own.

I agree that it is a badge of honor to commemorate an accomplishment. However, I had done a couple races before I realized that it was a specific brand, not a distance. It can mean whatever people want it to mean, but not everyone wants a logo on their bodies.

Agreed, and I have no issue with anyone getting whatever they want tattooed.  I will say this though, as far as the logo thing, it is easily the most recognized symbol of an ultra distance tri.  One that is recognizable to many outside of the tri community, one that has really preceded all the others, and for better or worse, the one that all the others hope to emulate (from a success and recognition standpoint ).
