Total Time = 1h 17m 1s
Overall Rank = 178/583
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 15/50
Event warmup:

Swam for about 300m just before the race start. Felt good in the water despite suffering from a sore back and muscle spasms.
Swim
  • 11m 45s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

Really good swim today. Wave start was smaller than normal so it was very civilised the whole way. I started near the front and got a good draft throughout. Pushed hard but controlled all the way and pushed harder at times so that I didn't lose my draft. I don't know whether it was my back injury but I was tending to swim towards the right all day so I had to be conscious of that. Good swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Was a little wobbly and disorientated getting out of the water but other than that it was quick and smooth despite the long run around the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 36m 34s
  • 20 kms
  • 32.82 km/hr
Comments:

Garmin had the course slightly long (as always with Robina) at 21.1km so my average speed wasn't as bad as it seemed. Still struggled to get into a good rhythm but felt better at the end than I did at the start which is a good sign. Played leap frog back and forth with a few guys in my AG but didn't lose too many places overall which is encouraging.
What would you do differently?:

Still my weak leg - need to build my strength.
Transition 2
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

No issues
Run
  • 24m 6s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 49s  min/km
Comments:

Started off a bit sluggish and thought I might have to struggle home. Came good though and second lap was better than my first which is good. Had a good battle with two guys in my AG and managed to pick both of them off in the last 400m. Again, as always with this Robina course the run was long with the Garmin measuring it at 5.45km so it was sub 4:30min/km which is okay for this stage of the season. Pretty decent run overall.
What would you do differently?:

Start better and try to hold on.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness and a minor back strain

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.
