Event warmup:

Set up area and warmed up
Swim
  • 32m 45s
  • 2162 meters
  • 01m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

Garmin got the course about 2160 meters longer than standard 2000. It seems that overall swim times were kind of slow, perhaps representing that distance.

I met the waves ahead at midway, and struggled to get through them, slowed me down a little bit, lost some momentum.

Everything was average with this swim, since the last time that I swam was the OIympic last month and the time before that was the Mountain Man 70.3 in Aug. I struggled a bit, but still got out at 10th in AG.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Pretty good, had trbouble putting on helmet thought, cost me about 10 seconds.
Bike
  • 2h 17m
  • 56 miles
  • 24.53 mile/hr
Comments:

The time above reflects what my finish time would have been if I had continued to ride.

I was on pace at 24.7mph avg. up to the time that my rear tube and tire burst apart. I don't know if I hit an object or what.

It was just before mile 27. My race was over at that point, packed it up and walked back to turn in my timing chip. I didn't have any spares on me, and refused tech help later on.

On target for new PR, but would have been off my 2:15 goal.

Avg. power was at 289 watts
NP was at 304 watts

Event comments:

This race was awesome and the Lifetime improved the course immensely. THANK YOU!!!

I was on target to finish at 4 hr 28 to 29 min....way off my goal of 4:25... but I would have won 1st place in AG and be the defending Lifetime Point Series Champion.

This hurt and sucks.

sorry to hear that!

I was looking for some SOMA Race reports to see how things went yesterday.

Sucks about your tire, but nothing you could have done looks like! Stinks!

How did Lifetime improve the course? I keep avoiding SOMA (have done it 3 times) due to the bike laps - very interested to see what you thought!

Again, sorry about the tire!

They opened the streets to 2 lanes for most of the course... no longer fighting with cars and other cyclists for space... they changed the course and went along McClintock for a little bit... the same path as the IMAZ towards McDowell. The speculation is that this race may become a WTC 70.3 and Lifetime was preparing the conditions for that... it's rumor though.... it would be cool.

good to know, and interesting as well! If it does become a 70.3, I'm only worried about the cost going up -sigh!

Sounds like most of the changes were good - I'm hoping to do SOMA next year. Thanks for the info!

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
