I was wondering if anyone had any advice or experience on how to add 3 weeks to Don Fink's IM plan?

I signed up for IMLOU and when I was planning my other races I realized there aren't any HIMs in my area that fit into the schedule. So, I am assuming it won't be a big deal to modify the schedule a bit to accommodate the HIM 3 weeks earlier. I think the best way to do this would be to start the training plan 3 weeks earlier so that a local HIM falls on the day it supposed to in the plan and then have an additional 3 weeks of training during the peak phase. Since the HIM is in the peak phase I was just going to repeat weeks 23-25 twice to accommodate the additional 3 weeks. Is this ok? Will I ruin the peak phase by repeating weeks 23-25?

Thanks.

Doubling your "peak" training block would give me concern.

I don't think you need to hit recommended race weekends spot on the date, there are more just suggested time frames. I would just incorporate the HIM whenever it falls, and adjust a bit immediately before and after to accommodate.

What does the plan say for the weekend you want to do the HIM? How far off is the prescribed training vs the race distances/effort?

Thanks for the response... If I keep the original 30-week plan, Challenge New Albany would fall at the end of week 19 in the plan... My scheduled training on that day calls for 1:00 hr bike (Z1) and a 1:30 hr run (Z1-Z2)..

And I may have been vague but I wouldn't be doubling my peak training phase... Just increasing it from 7 to 10 weeks

you mentioned no races being near you in that time frame - what about rev3 cedar point - that is ohio - its normally Sep 7, but gouge is that it will be the weekend after next year...that would put it about 4/5 weeks out from IMLOU

I did look at Rev3 but like the issue with Challenge New Albany, I don't know how to modify a plan to accommodate a difference of 3 weeks from the recommended HIM race... When I posted I was in the mindset that I needed a HIM race at week 22 with maybe a +/-1 week slip.

What's good about Rev3 is that my plan already calls for a 5:30 hr bike and 1 hr run so modifying the plan seems easier than modifying it for Challenge New Albany.

My only concern is if there enough time for a full recovery before IMLOU 4 weeks later?

Do the HIM at the end of week 19.  Adjust week 19 & 20, if necessary, to allow you to go into the race reasonably rested  and to recover during the following week.

As an alternative, follow a HIM training program for the HIM (probably not too different from the IM plan, but perhaps with a bit more threshold work).  Then do 10-weeks of IM specific training.  A series of articles that starts here might be worth your time. (Note: It is very unlikely that you should follow the 'plan' presented in those articles.)

Edit:  I would not recommend the HIM 4 weeks out.  Some people do it and it works OK for them, but much better to be doing your IM-specific work at that time.
