Howdy all!  

67 days to race day!  Hope training is going well.  One thing that helped me survive Ironman Coeur d'Alene (crazy hot) was driving the bike and run courses a couple days before the race.  There were some locals that made this possible.  I am travelling from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for this race with a buddy and we were wondering if any locals were willing to do the same for this race?  We'd make it worth your while.

I am not sure, personally, how my days are going to shake out just yet - but I'll probably be trying to organize some kind of BT meet-up that Saturday morning if anyone is interested. I've done this for three past IMs and it's fun meeting folks over something like a quick cup of coffee if anyone is game. Maybe if you haven't found someone by then, you can sweet talk one of us during that get-together

With that said, would anyone be interested in a coffee meetup on Saturday morning, 10/10? I mean, I am going to get some coffee either way so you won't hurt my feelings if you're not interested. Just thought I'd throw it out there! If I remember from a few years back, there's a fun local coffee shop not far from athlete and bike check-in. I'll investigate if there's any interest.

I'm planning to drive the course with a bud. I drove the course back in 2010 and it psyched me out, though. I kept thinking, "I didn't train for these hills!". I hope it's a much better experience this time around.

So I had my first minor meltdown/freak out last week. This season has been absolutely crazy and honestly looking back I probably had no business training for this race haha. When I did IMWI in 2012 work was about half as busy. That on top of the4 fact that I play in two bands with shows almost every Friday and Saturday. We have also been playing some week night shows for local fests etc... I also have added one more kid to the equation. It has just been really difficult to find any rhythm in my training. I have stayed consistent at about 8-10 hours week training. I hope to just suck it up the next 3 weeks and get some higher volume (12-14 hrs) and then just hope that my fitness is good enough. I was 13:56 at IMWI and this year I will be happy with a finish!

I did have some excitement this week since my wife finally "gave approval" to get a new bike. For the past 6 years I have been riding an old Trek road bike that I converted. I have made due with the old Trek and completed six 70.3's and one 140.6. It just got to the point where I did not feel safe anymore on it. I got my first ride on TUesday and it felt like I was going from a 1987 Ford Escort to a 2015 Mercedes haha. Cannot wait to race with it in October.

Hope everyones training is going good. Can't believe how fast the summer went and how quick this race is coming up...

Tons of people drive the course on Saturday.
I did it in 2013, and I saw dozens of other cars doing the same. I also biked the "finger" to calm my nerves a little. It's definitely the steepest hill, so mentally it was good for me.

I'm excited to read your reviews of the October race. I'm seriously considering a 2016 sign up.

People are really freaking out about this supposed "7:50 AM start time" on social media. I have not seen one thing from the race about this though. I love the people who are just now realizing and complaining about the 7:30am start. Everyone checked the box when they registered that the race would be starting at 7:30 and would only allow 16-1/2 hours to complete the race. Trying to just stay in my box and only worry about the things I can control. It is easy to get caught up in the pre-race panic or "the sky is falling" though. Think I just need to stay off the IMLV Facebook page group lol.

Does anybody here use Infinit for their nutrition? I switched this year from Perpetuem due to some GI issues (both training and racing) and have really liked it. I love the simplicity of it. No more gels, Endurolytes, Perpetuem,etc... Plus it tastes ok warm compared to the Perpetuem.

I have been training with a 3 hour mix (grape flavored) for my training rides. Curious to hear from the people who do use it if they continue with it on the run? If so do you modify your run formula? I have seen people that reduce the protien in the mix for the run? Any input would be great.

Also what is everyone else doing nutrition wise for the race?

I absolutely do NOT continue with it on the run. Too tired of the taste after 7 hours on the bike. I even have to mix up my nutrition on the bike a bit with other stuff like Payday or Fig Newton cookies just to get a different taste going and "chew" something.

I just use gels and what's on the course for the run. My stomach usually revolts so I can't keep much down, but gels and tootsie rolls have been my friend in the past. 

Also YES people are really freaking out over things they can't control this week. I wonder if the 8-week mark finally got people thinking it's getting close, I better start paying attention. I'm about to turn off notifications for that Facebook group, it's starting to get really alarmist and panicky - not what I need!

I'm not using Infinit. I use UCAN, which seems to work well for me. A while back, I used Perpetuem, but a really hot 2010 IMKY made it repulsive (to me). I have a few containers of Perpetuem in my bike room and I still get flashbacks...

As I said, I use UCAN, the plain powder, and just add protein to it. For the bike, I add more protein than for the run. On the bike, I go with 11 grams of protein per scoop (about one hour's worth of nutrtion). It helps with hunger and, according to a few studies, appears to enhance both fluid absorption and fluid retention. During the run, I reduce protein by 2/3 to 1/2 of the bike amount. It works for me, but I caveat that with this: You need to keep hydration up.

Oh, I do use electrolyte tabs, which I just drop in my water bottle.

For the run, I'll slam a bottle of UCAN an hour in, and live off the course for the rest of the race.

I use Infinit on both the bike and run. For the bike, I'll mix two 750-800cal bottles. For the run, I'll have maybe 300cal in a 20oz hand bottle. Same formula for both bike and run, and I'll add water to the bottle during the run, so it becomes somewhat less concentrated. My custom formula doesn't have much protein. I've heard people say that protein makes it somewhat frothy when bouncing up and down on the run.

It worked for IMFL and I didn't get sick of the taste (fruit punch, with the flavor dialed back a lot). I usually start taking Coke on the run in the last 6 miles.

Infinit seems to have solved the GI issues I was having with solid food (e.g. Stinger waffles), gels, EFS liquid shot, etc.

Agreed. I have nothing against the 15-17 hour folks (unlike some on the FB page), but knowing it would already be a late start which would not allow for the full 17 hours, and knowing it's a difficult bike course, I wonder why the 15-17 (and especially the 16+) hour types chose IMLOU. But it's too late now. Unfortunately, they'll be the ones sacrificing sleep to get in the swim line at 2am.

Just wait until we're about 10-14 days out and people start checking weather forecasts!

I don't think it is specific to that group. I'm on the IM Maryland FB page as well. There seems to be a lot of panicky like chatter there as well. I think maybe just pre-race jitters combined with fatigue from training for one of these for the first time causes the type of panicking that's happening. I am enjoying it actually. For some reason when others panic, I get more calm. Weird.

As for the nutrition, I use Gatorade Endurance and Hammer Gel on the bike. I will continue with it on the run. I get tired of the taste, but my stomach does alright with just about anything, so I try to keep it simple.

I think I'll be up for the Saturday morning coffee meet up, just keep us posted on where and what time.  I haven't been real active on BT for a couple of years due to work schedule and IM training but I think it would be great just to meet up with a few folks. It's pretty likely I'll be bring my support crew (wife) when we do meet.

for nutrition, I'm an EFS guy. It seemed to prove itself well at Madison last year so I'll be sticking with it again this year..  I use 4 bottle and stop in SN for the second pair.  300 cals each and I'll take some liquid shot as well, I may use stinger waffles to work on hunger pangs late in the bike.

Did you sign up for the "Full Refund Plan" insurance when you signed up for the race?
If you did, and you're cancelling for a covered reason:
- Pregnancy
- Childbirth
- Job relocation
- Injury

Hey, ppl, a little more than 40 days left!

How're the last few weeks of training going? Any big plans this weekend?

I'm riding a hilly 90+ tomorrow, then running afterwards. This is one of three long rides I have left! The coming week will be a down/rest week, then it's time for the final few weeks of higher volume. I think I've previously mentioned that I plan to do a 3 week run taper, and a 2 week bike taper.

Man, how time does fly!

We booked a condo through VRBO.com - it's within walking distance of 4th Street Live and has plenty of rooms and bathrooms + a garage (we are driving), full kitchen, WiFi, etc. It was about the same price as each of us getting separate hotel rooms in the same area. Last time I did LOU we stayed across the river in Jeffersonville - much more reasonable prices and only a 10-minute drive with no parking issues the entire weekend. 

It will just depend on how much you want to spend and where you prefer to be located - in the middle of the action (Galt House is the host hotel, very popular), away from the crowds (in a nearby town like Jeffersonville), or somewhere in between (like what I'm doing this year, a condo but close to the finish line).

On long runs, I've been taking 4-oz of Gatorade Endurance every 10-minutes, for a total of about 24-oz an hour. Should I boost my liquid consumption on the runs?
