Less than a year away! :) Who is in for the first October IMLOU? I will be there, along with my trusty iron-girls LindaKC and InnerAthlete. We did this race in 2011 and are back for more.

To kick off this thread, I have a question about tune-up races. I like to do a 70.3 distance race in my training, but am having a hard time finding one in late summer in my area. Are any of you thinking about a HIM in the months leading up to LOU? Which one?

My wife and I live and Boise, Idaho, and will probably do the Boise 70.3 in early June - not ideal, timing wise, but literally right outside our front door. At least we'd get the feel of a longer-distance race before October (which, considering I haven't done an IM since 2009, I will definitely need).

That is also the weekend of the former-Kansas-70.3-now-probably-St-Louis-70.3. At 18 weeks out from the race that's just when I'll be starting my IM-focused training

Mid-August would be super ideal, but man I am just not finding anything. Might have to be a self-supported deal.

I'm in for 2015. First IM. Just booked the hotel this past weekend.

Still trying to plan out the rest of my 2015 schedule. Thinking of going for the full cycle - a sprint, oly, 70.3, and IM. I got the sprint and oly easy as there are nice races really close to home. Would need to find an August 70.3...most likely Steelhead, but not 100% yet.

Woohoo! Welcome! I like the "full circuit idea" that's awesome.

I did find a 70.3 that I think will work - Pigman in Palo, IA is Aug. 16, which falls perfectly on the schedule at 8 weeks out. It's still a 7.5 hour drive for me but if I pick up my girlfriend in KC that will break it up.

Has anyone does this race in the past? I am looking for a good easy FLAT first Half. I was thinking about Redman in OKC but Louisville is alot closer.

Lisa you mentioned a race might be in St Louis. Do you have any additional information? That is where I live and that might just have to make my mind up for me

Thanks!
Nina

I'm in for Louisville! I've always wanted to do this one but couldn't swing the August date with my 4 kids' school starts. October is perfect. My youngest is going to kindergarten next year, so I'll have some extra time to get in the peak training. I'm doing Muncie 70.3 in July (from Cleveland) and Challenge Cedar Point Full Aquabike as part of my lead up to Louisville.

Hi All,

I am not yet in for Louisville, but considering to go there from Europe.

Does anybody know, what impact the race date change will have for the race. A friend of mine did Louisville in 2010 or 11 and it was extremely hot and a non-wetsuit swim.

Now that was in August and now the race is in October - isn´t it much cooler than ? and how about wetsuit ?

greetings from Finland

Hello all !!

I'm in for IM Louisville 2015 as well. This will be my 3rd race at this venue. I did this event in 2010 and 2012. Those races were very hot, and I'm definitely looking forward to some cooler weather this year. I have heard a rumor that the water temperature this year in October was 67.

As far as tune up races, I'm planning on doing the Challenge Knoxville Half in mid-May, and the Challenge New Albany Half in late-July.

This is a great race course and my favorite finish line so far. 4th Street Live is really cool.

I did this race - Louisville - in 2011 but Nina it's a FULL Ironman, no half option (is that what you meant?)

I've also done Redman and it is VERY flat. A great race!

The rumor is that Kansas 70.3 (traditionally held the first weekend in June in Lawrence, KS) is "moving" to St. Louis on that same weekend - nothing has been announced yet so it's all hearsay, but pretty strong rumors. There's a good thread in Tri Talk and in the Kansas forum right now on it.

Historically yes the high (air) temperatures should only fall in the low 70s F, and water temps are looking to be in the high 60s F so I would definitely plan on wearing a wet suit! Morning air temps will likely be in the low 50s F, brrrrr!

A race in St. Louis??? That would be awesome! But St. Louis in June is TOASTY!
My next one is IMAZ 2015 and maybe Louisville 2016.
Clearly Lisa we have a different perception of flat, then again, live in Houston.
I would not call Redman flat I would call it 'textured' Some rollers, not significant elevation change but those roads are horrible. Sad because I love the venue but won't go back because of road conditions.

Thinking about Louisville for 2015, but I am concerned about the following two points:

a. Bike Elevation: I am from Miami, so a climb from me is going up a bridge that crosses from mainland to the Keys or South Beach... You get the idea. I did IMTX last year and I felt great, but this race has 2,000 ft more elevation than Texas and I am not sure whether I will be able to train properly for it. So, is it a hilly course or more rolling type of course? I think I am fine with rolling hills, but long climbs are a different story!

b. Weather: I read in a few posts that the weather may be in the 50s in the morning?!?!?! We hardly go under 60s degrees in the coldest days here... What about the rest of the day?

I know 140.6 are 140.6 miles no matter what, but the more acclimated to it I can be, the better I guess...

Thank you very much!

I was in Texas this year as well. Being from Ohio, I would have classified that course as relatively flat. Louisiville, on the other hand, is pretty rolling with about 8-10 decent climbs and a few short steep climbs.

The weather does look to be in the 50s or colder in the morning and low 70s in the "heat of the day".

Thank you rwekin!

Texas bike course was great. Actually, I liked it a lot more than the flat and windy conditions I train here in Miami. Louisville looks definitively hillier and for sure WAY colder!! I still have a few days to make my decision and hopefully it won't sell out before I am ready to commit!

Agree with this. I come from the super flat part of Kansas so I found the Louisville hills a bit challenging but SUPER fun! I made a point to travel to some hillier areas to train the last time I raced here (and even rode the course once, there are some fantastic organized training days through IAMTRI.com), it helped a ton.

In 2013 I did Vineman which had VERY similar weather. I was bundled up in the morning, wearing gloves and arm warmers on the bike. I took them off at special needs and then by the run I was wearing arm coolers, LOL! I thought the weather/temperature swing was pretty darn near perfect.

In! Just registered on Thursday. 3rd Ironman, 3rd time at Louisville. Looking forward to doing this race a third time now that my training terrain has changed dramatically. 2 months ago I moved from Coastal Georgia (very flat, I would get 200 feet of elevation gain in a 100 mile ride) to Northeast Kansas (my 20 miles rides here I get about 1100 feet of elevation gain). I had a hard time at Louisville with my training terrain, but I think next year's race will be different.

Signed up as well! First attempt at anything over Olympic distance so I am extremely excited and nervous. I plan on doing Challenge New Albany as my dress rehearsal so we'll see how that goes.. Now I just need to find a good off-season schedule before starting my 30-week plan!

I'm a little late to this group. I signed up a few weeks ago. It will be my first full distance IM. As far as a late summer half goes, I will be doing Lake George Half Iron. It is a fantastic vacation spot and wonderful bike course. Looking forward to hearing and sharing secrets on the Louisville course and training in general.

I'm in for 2015. I just did the IMFL (duathlon) and was looking for an IM with a more challenging bike course, to try and take advantage of being a lightweight. I live in the northern Dallas 'burbs and at least 5 teammates are also doing IMLou. For those that don't know, there appears to be a very active and informative IMLou Facebook page as well.

I had also planned on doing the Kansas 70.3, but now might have to look to Buffalo Springs instead. I'm also doing Galveston.

Are you referring to the Ironman Louisville 2015 group? If so, I agree. There is some great chatter and information there.
