Although the headline is misleading, it made me wonder how often do people competing in a full qualify for The Boston Marathon?

The run course needs to be USATF certified in order for you to qualify for Boston during an IM run.  I'm not sure how many other IMs have their run course certified besides Kona...but I don't think there are that many.  Of course at Kona, you have the pointy end there, so it's happens quite a bit.  Now if you're simply asking how often does someone run a "BQ time" during an IM (not officially qualify)...then it's probably a handful.  You can just look back at any IM race result and figure it out pretty quickly.

The timing company that does the IM events (including Kona) posted this to ST after the race earlier this month.

Only ~13% of Kona competitors qualified, you can expect that the other IMs (with a lower caliber of competitors overall) will have a much lower qualifying percentage.

Only Kona and Louisville: http://www.usatf.org/events/courses/search/searchResults.asp?embed=...

Of course, if someone gets a BQ time at a non-USATF certified ironman, then they would no no trouble squeezing in a BQ marathon sometime through the rest of their year.

I signed up for Ironman Frankfurt, next year July - and I am very excited about it. I originally planned to run my first Marathon in the middle of September, but am not sure if this is wise.

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

I can't say it enough, the feeling of treading water for that final minute, helicopters over head, Mike Riley's Iron-voice over the P.A. - just awesome. I cannot believe I'm here!
