Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 40m 50s
Overall Rank = 408/636
Age Group = ZM
Age Group Rank = 8/16
Pre-race routine:

Slept on site. Got up at 0500 and staged bike after checking in and getting marked. Filled water and setup T1. Boarded bus and headed to Swim start.
Event warmup:

Short sprint and warm up swim.
Swim
  • 28m 43s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Set another PR for the 1500m by beating my time last year!!

This year: 00:28:43
Last year: 00:29:XX
What would you do differently?:

More practice to overcome the arm issue. Backstroke proved pretty useful. May need to work on it IOT exploit the advantages of using solely arms rather than a combination with legs.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Not bad considering I had to strip my wetsuit solo. Beat last years T1 time by xxxx. Overall, good T1 time. The run from swim exit wasn't bad, but I did get caught behind another participant who was running much slower than I was.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting out of the wetsuit a little faster and lowering T1 time with suit to under 00:01:15.
Bike
  • 35m 48s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.11 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike felt really good although the time and the feeling are not mutual. I passed quite a few riders and was not passed by anyone. Final shoot cones were too close together and I had to pass my last rider on the right, but s/he was outside of the cones anyway. Hit one right-hand turn and really leaned the bike down, thought I was going for a slide for a moment or two. I went upright and to the left of the cones and was able to cut back to the left after about 20'. Little hairy for a moment!! Dismount was out of the shoes and running once I made contact with the ground.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. I make up time on the bike and the run wasn't bad. I tried to run my Ironman pace on both.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Coming off of the bike went very well. I did walk for about 10' and that likely cut my time drastically.
What would you do differently?:

Don't walk. Save a little more leg the last 500m of the bike to get me through the initial dismount and racking.
Run
  • 32m 53s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run. I tried out my Ironman pace. Goal was to keep it under 12m/mi and I accomplished that. I pushed hard on the bike to simulate noodle legs at T2 and I must admit it worked out well. I maintained a good cadence to assist in my T2 to run segment.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank Fanta x 3 and 2 x water. Ate some oranges and a bag of chips. No pizza this year. :(

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hydration on the run I believe. There was only one water point, which is normal, and I probably did not drink enough on the bike.

Event comments:

Overall nice race. I use this race to test the water (no pun intended) prior to the Ironman which occurs in three weeks. The exit point and run to T1 are the same for B2B, as is T1.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
