Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania
United States
57F / 14C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 16m 56s
Overall Rank = 43/77
Age Group = F40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/8
Pre-race routine:

Got up a little after 5 to find the water was off. Got dressed, took the dog out, and hit the road. Got turned around at the bottom of the mountain due to a water main break (that explains the lack of water!) so I went up over the mountain to the highway. I ate my bagel with pb and a banana in the car. Got there right about 8am.
Event warmup:

None other than walking over to registration, back to the car, and then back to the start line.
Run
  • 3h 16m 56s
  • 20 miles
  • 09m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Small race but there was still some traffic at the start, but things pretty quickly stretched out. It was really windy on the out sections. Just before the last turn-around there was a flock of geese on the path! I did not like that - I was just feet away from them. They were more interested in eating than bothering me though.
What would you do differently?:

I probably shouldn't have tried as hard to get to 9:30s on the first out section. I think I spent more energy than I should have fighting that wind. Need to stay more mentally focused in the real race. I did get the pace back at the end though so I was happy about that.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to food area, back for awards, and then back to the food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pacing and to some extent the wind, but I think it was mostly pacing through the wind that kept me from averaging closer to 9:30. However, I was purposely trying to keep from running my race here and having the marathon suffer (like I think I did 2 years ago).

Event comments:

This was a fun event as usual and the towpath is great place to run. Runbucks puts on nice events and I would run more of them if I lived closer. We got Finisher sweatshirts at the end instead of medals. I liked that because I don't care so much about medals for shorter than marathon distance.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.
