I ran XC my senior year in HS. I ran 17:37 for 5K I wasn't even close for state even back then in '85. Then and now, you don't have a chance if you can't run 14-15 minute 5K's (or your team didn't have a chance unless you had a few guys under 15 min.). I'm guessing Jr is running so good luck!

We were at the Age Group Provincial meet yesterday.

41 starters in u11 boys. My son ran 10.42 for 2k and was the youngest boy to score points on his team (4 runners score, 2 runners displace). From the 6-3 were 10-11 (best kid is 10 and 4th O/A) and 3 were 7. The squad will be moving to indoor track in January. Water Polo mini tournament next weekend for Mini Me.

my 14 yo niece ran a 14m48s 4k which is about an 18,5m 5k. She doesn't train at running. Kids just run fast.

60+ years ago, fast 17 yo kids were going sub 15min 5k.

As impressive as it is, it's not new.

Yep....the good news is that there are more of them.

Wow!  Your niece would have the 57th fastest Freshman 5K time in our entire COUNTRY....she should train.

I am afraid to say this because you will tell me that swimming carries over to running, which it doesn't....but she is top 10 in the country in the 100 (6th) and 200 freestyle (8th). This was at Canadian AG champs last summer. Her father is a runner, her mother a swimmer.
More important, she is a smart kid, top in her class.

Sorry, in people who have the genetics to run well it absolutely carries over.....especially in kids.  She fits perfectly.  You'd be insane to try to make anyone believe she can run a 5K in her AG that puts her in the top .001 of her class in the U.S., never trains running, and all of her swimming hasn't had a carry over effect.  Wait.....you'd have to more than insane....or maybe it's less.

There is no doubt here swim fitness helps her. But she is exceptional. Other kids as talented as her in swimming do not carry over to the run. As shown to you before, carry over from swimming to running does not occur normally, although there are freak occurences.
There are also things that are occurring specifically in a 14 year old growing body that do not occur in AG triathletes, which is where you have tried to say there is cross over in the past.

Bowing out of this debate. Been there, done that...

Except that she doesn't get any of those benefits toward her running......since she doesn't train, so no run adaptations at all.

Look, it's OK.  You throw up a really fast run time for a 14 year old girl. I say wow.  You say it's because of all the swimming she did. I say yeah. You say no.  LMAO

I got it.

correction, I never said she runs fast because of her swim. I don't know why she runs fast. She is a fast runner, she is a fast swimmer. She is also a good dancer. Does dance make you a fast runner ?

btw, when I say she doesn't train, she goes for jogs/runs with her dad now and then. But she doesn't train track. Maybe I should make a case that jogging makes you fast :-)
