Running Springs, California
United States
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 56m 20s
Overall Rank = 8/25
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Waffle with peanut butter and honey
Event warmup:

Hill climb on the bike to the start location
Run
  • 09m 4s
  • 1.5 kms
  • 06m 02s  min/km
Comments:

Probably paced myself a little too much, could have gone harder
What would you do differently?:

Push just a little harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Bike rack had fallen over when I got to my bike. Had to stand up the rack and untangle my bike before I could get going.
What would you do differently?:

The problem here is that their bike racks are too short for mountain bikes so its difficult to get the bikes to stand up correctly which results in the bikes falling and taking the racks with them. I guess next year I'll try to dig a hole under my wheel to make sure it's off the ground.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 43s
  • 13 kms
  • 11.03 km/hr
Comments:

Could have pushed much harder. This is my best portion of the event but knowing that the run was looming in the distance kept me from pushing as hard as I could. Also the deep sand in some high speed sections made me uncomfortable and led to me slowing down.
What would you do differently?:

Be confident in my training and push harder
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Went well, got out fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 33m 57s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 47s  min/km
Comments:

Had to walk a lot because of the steepness of the terrain and how loose the soil was. Towards the end I started cramping in my quads.
What would you do differently?:

More electrolytes to avoid cramping and train for hills more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water and gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inability to push harder on the bike and then cramps during the run

Event comments:

No photographer present which was a bummer and in order to get to the start you have to ride up part of the course which is a long sandy climb, if you forget anything you'll probably miss the start by the time you get back up. A shuttle of some sort would be very useful for this event.

Course: Tough. Uphill right out of T2 and very sandy and steep. At one point in the course you had to jump over a deep crevice which was about 5 feet wide. Some people had to go down into it and then climb out. Mount Diablo is named correctly. There is no running up it, it's steep and loose and coming down is even harder than going up.

Have a goal when you get into the water. If your purpose is distance, then set your pace for endurance. If your objective is speed, then incorporate drills.

Can't run outside in the snow? Think again. I flew up the first hill with surprising ease and power. The Yaktrax gripped into the ice like racing spikes on a rubber track. Sweeeeet.
