Man, I was excited when Mohican was moved to July as it gave me a race on my Bday. Then it was moved back to June and I considered not doing this one again, but now that I have seen the bike course I am definitely in for round 2. I guess at least I will not have to run up that hill at mile 4, now I get to ride the bike up it twice! Is it spring yet :)

I wasnt planning on doing this one again or any tris really next season but the change in bike route might have changed my mind or if someone needs a bike leg for the relay let me know I would definetly be in for that. Those hills are some of my favorites around the area.

Yeah, this was my first HIM last year. was a sick course. I was kinda bummed they moved the course around.

I will not be doing it this year. Picked a little flatter one.

I'm thinking about doing this as my first HIM this summer. The elevation gain seems pretty rough though. What is the Flat(er) HIM course in Ohio?

i think you really only have a few a few options.

  1. In mid-may there is the little smokies half that is attached to the end of the triple T event put on by HFP.
  2. June is mohican mentioned above
  3. July is the ironman 70.3 in muncie
  4. end of august is the great buckeye challenge, near Springfield.  this is not flat though, but easier than mohican
  5. september is challenge cedar point.  which is for the most part flat, maybe one or 2 hills
  6. End of september there is a half at deer creek.

so maybe more than a few options

i have done 2, 4 and 5 and enjoyed all 3.  even though i dnf the buckeye due to being unprepared.  i am currently signed up to do Mohican and Cedar Point.  If i was to suggest one for the 1st timer it would be the Challenge Cedar point race.  i have done this race twice, and even though the lake has not cooperated really enjoyed both experiences.  i think the downfall is the run can be tedious as there are several down and backs on city streets.  The muncie ironman is also completely flat, but the price and risk of high heat always kept me away.  feel free to go through my race reports and if you have any questions let me know.  i am no expert but can at least tell you the mistakes i have made

and welcome to BT!

Matt,

Thanks for all the info. I will definitely re-think if I want to do the Mohican or the cedar point one for my first 1/2. Part of me just wants to get it out of my system mid season.

Great Western Reserve on June 9 this year. Not nearly as hilly as Mohican
