Subject: Guys - IM rules on "relieving on the fly"
Did my last 112 mi bike race rehearsal today for IM WI prep, and where we live there are few cars/houses so I can pee while coasting rather than having to stop. This got me to wondering about the rules during an IM.

Can you take care of business on the fly if you are discreet about it, or does it violate the public nudity rule I think I read about (maybe that rule applies only to the transition areas?). Or, can you only do it at porta potties at designated race support areas. I haven't had to resort to the pee in the pants strategy yet, but I think I could do it during a race if I really needed to. Please don't answer unless you've done an IM and/or know how the rules specifically address this (i.e. not looking for opinions). Thanks for any input.

The rules are no but at Coeur D'Alene they told us if we were out in the wooded areas thats one thing but going on someone's front yard is another.  I'm not really sure how we were supposed to take that.  I know at some races (Florida Half, Half Vineman...) they go out of their way to say absolutely no.  At IM it seems to be left to the athelete's discretion; a very dangerous thing.  I generally just go while still on the bike but I definitely do a look back for officials.

They're not going to scribe a rule that allows for public nudity or public urination.  But, they have addressed the topic in pre-race meetings in years past.  And, as you would imagine, discretion is the key.  They recognize that this bodily function is a part of long distance racing, but they don't want you peeing in someone's front yard and having to deal with the potention associated complaints.  If you can do it discretely, no one will care.  But, by the books, it's against the law and therefore against the rules.  Best to take a peek around to make sure no race officials are nearby.

I've done the "just pee my pants" thing before.  Don't think I'll do that again...tends to exacerbate saddle discomfort for me.  I usually just find a spot along the course where I can pull off and do my business hidden by trees/bushes.  That's the typical procedure.  If needed, there are porta johns at every aid station, too.

I was riding the course this weekend w/ a buddy and he asked me the same thing.

Ditto on the previous comment...

However, there are plenty of areas on the course at IMWI where you can be discreet. I told my buddy I look for places where both myself and my bike are not visible to a casual passerby. This way the SAG wagon doesn't stop. They will if they see an unattended bike.

USAT Rule 3.4 n
# Indecent Exposure. Public nudity at any time during the event is prohibited. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.

This covers everywhere...

Some do the "on bike" routine...I have to much respect for myself and my bike to all over either! Also, If I happened to get caught behind someone doing this & got sprayed, They'd get a water bottle upside the head!!! Don't laugh I know a couple of people who have been showered in this fashion during IM.

At IMLP the bosses said no peeing anywhere unless it is a toilet though they made one exception: race directors front lawn.

Same rules apply...

If you're hanging your junk out on the bike and a referee sees it, they may penalize you. If you pee in your shorts, that's your business. However,...I have to much respect for myself and my bike to all over either! Also, If I happened to get caught behind someone doing this & got sprayed, They'd get a water bottle upside the head!!! Urine is actually a sterile liquid and isn't going to cause you or your bike any more harm than the Gatorade you spill all over it. Spray yourself down with a bit of water when you're done and it's all good. That's the only reason I had water on my bike at IMLP.

I'm considerate about it and pay attention to where people are behind me. But if someone is too close and stays there, then all bets are off. If they threw something at me because of it, they're not going to be finishing that race.

I don't recall any specific mention to peeing on the fly...but peing behind the fly is something I have done. The problem for me is it would fill my shoes, well, the right shoe as my junk likes to ride right, also.

Anyhow, actually that last line belongs on trinewbies, not here.

I check behind me, also. I felt embarassed the first few times so I made quite certain nobody was close.

Actually, now that I think about it, I was riding solo, training, and the sun was getting low. Country road, nobody around, so I let loose without stopping. Looked behind me, and there was a nice long line of urine glinting the sun back at me. It was funny. I laughed.

I wouldn't throw things but I might make a comment. I have had enough runners hock "stuff" from their mouths and me catch soe of it.

I guess if you want to get technical about it, public nudity could also be stripping down in the changing tent in transition...in front of 150 other atheletes and volunteers.  I go with the discretion opinion.  Ducking into the woods and not on someone's front lawn.

Yah, well, the only tinklers I saw were tinkling at the edge of the woods. I yelled at one guy saying "I'm telllllllllinnnnnnnnnn!!!" and we all got a laugh. Pretty comical.

Yes, using discretion is key.

Did IM WI yesterday in the freakin' wind, rain and cold and I can now personally attest to the fact that in that kind of weather, peeing on yourself on the bike is GREAT because it warms your legs up - even if only for 30 seconds. Saw a few guys duck into the woods. I ducked into the woods along the lake twice to take a leak.

same thing applies when you are swimming in cold water with your wetsuit on.  some call it gross, i call it warm.

At IMC there were guys peeing discretely all over the bike course (off the shoulders) including myself.  I think the rule is written to promote discretion more than to penalize someone.

I doubt very much a ref would tag you for it unless you were drawing your name on the asphalt yelling woo-wooo.

Sterile fluid or not, I'm not going to pee myself and spend another 6 hours sloshing in it.

Girlfriend claims it is gross when I tell her I tinkled in the wetsuit.

I call it nice and warm and allows a much more relaxed swim.

Only do it when I have enough time when I think the suit will flush out before I crawl onto land.

Maybe that is TMI. Oh well.

If you wear socks they should do all the absorption so you don't have to worry about the slohing
