Should it take to get comfortable and competent as a rule of thumb? Experienced road and mountain biker. Just trying to plan the purchase.

As soon as I got on mine I was comfortable.  Only adjustment period was my due to my upper shoulders/neck area but I also have an issue related to a ski accident.

It took a couple hundred miles for my neck to get comfortable in aero position.

IME a rider who has experience riding can transition fairly easily. The biggest challenge is getting used to sitting on the saddle differently and the fatigue in the neck. Depending on your race distance you may be fine after a few shorter rides but if you're doing an IM you are going to want a few 100 milers locked into the aerobars to be ready for race day.

Took one good ride to get comfortable with the handling, took a while for the muscles to get comfortable with the areo position.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

Most of those thinking about tackling a long swim instinctively feel it’s necessary to Do much to build endurance - more yards, harder laps. But a focus on Receiving is ideal for long distances.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.

My question is on nutrition in a long race. Most intake will occur on the bike, but I'm curious as to the details. I didn't do real well in this area last year and really need to improve.
