Pro 15655 | Subject: Fast kids! Nike Midwest Regional. Right at 200 of these 368 high school boys came through the 1 mile mark at 4:50 or under......185 of them finished in a "national elite" time of under 16:30 for 5K. Jr. said it was a 3 mile demolition derby and the most fun he's ever had racing. I know it was the most fun I've ever had watching a bunch of kids race. Looking at them come up a long straight from a distance was hard to fathom how fast they were running as a giant pack.....it looked like a freight train coming. I said, "what did that feel like running with that pack at that speed?".....he said, "dad, it felt like AAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! for 3 miles". Nike built a course/complex in Terre Haute (and I assume other places) where only XC races are held. They have a 5K, 8K, and 10K course laid out. It's all grass, but it's like running on a golf fairway, at least it was this year because the grass was cut really short. In other years I've heard it's been longer. The NCAA championships will be held on the same course in two weeks......I think we may run over there again to watch. It's laid out so that you can watch quite a bit of a race without moving much. Fisherman.....LOL....what?? |

The 10k for NCAA's in Terra Haute is plenty tough without adding hills. I would not call it flat. Add in temps are normally 35-40deg and the winds is always blowing what feels like a gale. That course is plenty challenging. |

That course is plenty challenging. Yeah, the course is nowhere near flat. On Sunday it was pretty optimal for fast times. The course was in great shape, the temp. was about 37, there was little to no wind. Last year on the same course the times were a full minute slower......windy, wet, cold. |

Expert 1394 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Fast kids! if you go on Saturday take a Jacket. NCAA meet seems to guarantee the wind will blow. At the moment looks like it will be around 40 with 15mph wind and some chance of rain. Great course to watch on, you can get to multiple points to watch the battle. |

No doubt....perfect venue to watch a race. We may go....depends on my kid. He's taking a few weeks off from running, but my money says he'll want to go watch the big guns race. |

Welp.....we won't be there.....if you are running good luck! Jr. has found a swim meet he wants to swim in.....I think he's already switched gears. Edited by Left Brain 2014-11-18 5:47 PM |

Can you only imagine the thoughts of the guys that got spit out the back because they were 'only' able to run 5 min mile paces. |

Oh well would have been cool for him to see, but there will be other opportunities. Hope he has fun and swim fast at his meet. I will not be there. My old and creaky body is many moons away from my old college days, but it sure brings back good memories. Edited by qrkid 2014-11-19 8:57 AM |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Fast kids! Originally posted by GAUG3 what kind of times do you think they could post on a flat road race? I don't know. Jr. ran a 16:04 at that race and he's done 16:04 on a track with very little trouble (during a world record relay attempt for 100 5K's by 100 runners).....and has ran 16:00 off the bike in a sprint triathlon (but who knows how correct the distances are in any race). Jr. thinks he can run 15:15 for 5K on a track without a big problem (he has a 15:58 this year in XC).....but he never does it so who knows. His mile time, from last year, is 4:18 so I guess macmillan would have a guess at a 5K. The winning time in that race was 15:03.....I would think he could get near 14:00 on a flat road course or on a track. I guess I'm going to say 1 minute faster, but it's a wild arse guess. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Fast kids! I did some times checking.....and I don't think 1 minute is such a bad guess after all. The winner, who was 15:03, has quite a few 3200 track runs at the 9:00 mark.....that'd put him right at 14:00 for a 5K on a track, give or take a few. He also has a 4:11 mile. I think Jr. is probably right on with his idea of a 15:15 5K and like I said, he ran 16:04 in the Nike race, but he was in the scrum for the duration of the race. |
