Sorry, this

https://kurtkinetic.com/products/kinetic-inride-pod/

Kinetic inRide
T-2000

Our incredibly accurate fluid trainer power curve allows precise wattage readings at exact speeds as measured indoors on a Kinetic fluid trainer. Firmware in the inRide Sensor Pod measures speed and cadence at the tire and translates that to wattage with a simple equation. That data and the heart rate data is collected and displayed on the paired iPhone. Postworkout file sharing allows you to upload training data to your favorite web site or email files to a remote coach.

All current Kinetic fluid trainers including: the Road Machine, Rock And Roll and Pro Trainer are compatible with Kinetic inRide allowing the rider to capitalize on the benefits of a wattage-based training program.

Congrats! Nice win.

Question though. I have never heard of this before but I wonder how it can be accurate when so much can change on a trainer based on drum tension? How does the device know what sort of tension you are running on the tire and equate that to power? Or is there a very specific setup procedure with this device?

Cool deal either way, and even more awesome that you got it free!

You can duplicate drum tension really close by inflating your tire to the same pressure before every ride and putting a mark on your adjustment knob when the drum first contacts the tire, then turn it the same number of turns every time.

I think that the power assumptions are based on zero slip, but they could calculate in a little "loss" of power in the surface exchange between your tire and the drum.

I know mine is always consistent because I inflate my tire exactly the same and turn the crank exactly the same amount for tension.  However, mine could be different then yours if you turn the crank down one less revolution or run less pressure for example.  Sounds like a good math problem to calculate the loss during the energy transfer.

Oh, and congrats Dan!!
If you don't like it you can send it to me.  ;-)

It does a spin down calibration to sort all of that out.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.
