Swim
  • 39m 8s
  • 1708 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went well. could only breath to right b/c of small waves. Attempted to draft for the first time. Not sure if it made a difference or not. Salt water and a wet suit make a big difference. being able to train the long course year round and the fact that the training pool is cold made race day easier.
What would you do differently?:

i had lost a lot of my lung capacity due to my not being able to train after a back injury. Being healthy will help a lot.
Transition 1
  • 07m 12s
Comments:

had new cleats and pedals but i practiced the week of the race for about 30 min just getting in then out of them. There was a 1/4 mile run from swim end to t1.
Bike
  • 3h 13m 11s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.39 mile/hr
Comments:

bike went well. I knew this would be my strongest even. my goal was to stay over 16 mph even with water bottle refills.
What would you do differently?:

more leg strength training to bump my pace up to over 18
Transition 2
  • 04m 8s
Comments:

volunteers take the bike and hand you the bag with your running gear.
Run
  • 2h 35m 24s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

this is where my back injury really showed. Not being able to run had killed my running endurance. I had lost feeling in my foot which my doc said meant i needed to stop. I walked almost the whole thing but was able to get feeling back in my foot. Again staying healthy is the key.

Event comments:

i will be doing the full next year.

That's a pretty gutsy performance given your injuries etc. Stay healthy and I'm looking forward to reading your full distance report next year!

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

I strained by lower back last week. I know that I need to rest in order for it to heal fully, but I am concerned that I am going to lose needed fitness for the race. Will this affect my performance?

With stroke improvements I find that when I try and swim long I have lost any speed gains that I had because my stroke count just creeps up and up. I also feel like I'm running out of air.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
