So I love watching the pros at Kona but it would be nice to actually be able to learn a bit more from it all. Why don't they ever show video of the pros in Transition...or watching the pros refuel while on the bike? There are a few "how-tos" that I, as a newer triathlete, would love to be able to learn by watching some of the pros do it, but they never show you any of this.

I have wondered the same thing. Even when I looked on Youtube before my first race, there were surprisingly few videos of people actually doing transitions. There were a lot of people talking about transitions or practicing their stand-up act about your first triathlon, but an informative demonstration was really hard to find.

Did you watch the live coverage?  They didn't show a ton of it but I definitely remember seeing T1 and T2.

Are you referring to IM/140.6 distance races? Those transitions are in a closed tented area (male and female separate) so people can do full changes - no cameras

A great way to see this and observe the good, bad and ugly is to volunteer in T1 or T2 change tents during a race.

If you want to see fast T1 and T2 from the pros, find some videos of the ITU/Olympic races.

he did a good job at cheating as well as a reasonable one in transitions-even with sitting down to put socks on

It would be nice to see how the pros do it at any distance.   When I first got into this sport I found a DVD on transitions and it was really helpful.  I've pretty much put all of what is taught to use.   Maybe worth looking into.   I found it here:  http://www.amazon.com/Triathlon-Transitions-Mastering-4th-Discipline/dp/1935045091

Start at the 50 second mark and then again at 1:45.  Don't blink!

Rev3 used to include some transitions in their highlight and various race videos. Don't know if they're still hosting all those on the site though.

Ok, so fill me in...basically it looks like the pros come out of the swim....hop on the bike (without socks), and ride out with their feet on top of the their shoes (not inside).
I'm guessing, at some point outside of transition they are slipping their feet into their shoes?

Coming back from the bike, changing into running sneaks...quick pull laces? No socks? How does one run 13.1/26.2 without socks?

When on the long bike courses...how are they refilling water bottles? (silly question, but I haven't been on a long course yet).

T1, yes, basically none will use socks for the bike. Ride out with feet on shoes, or a few may slip feet in as the jump on. I *think* more tend to do the former. They'll get up to speed and then slip in & buckle down. It may be a mile down the road before they do this. You'll see some idiot age groupers try to do this immediately and clog everything up.

T2, yes, quick pull laces of some type are very common. Short course goes no socks. They have the shoes and training in for that. Long course may see some sock use. Becomes more individual with longer distances.

Bottle refills are at the aid stations. Some will just switch out the bottle at every aid station. Maybe 2 if they're really good and need it. Pros have WAY more space than age groupers do. Some have a type of storage tank with straw. These tend to have a quick access port on them made for fast & easy refills. Ideally they would dump the bottle in quickly and chuck it, but they might need to hold it to the next aid station if not fast enough. Littering is bad and is a penalty. An age grouper is probably best planning to hold the bottle and chuck it later. Aid stations are tricky with a lot of things going on, so get the bottle, get through the station, then refill.

When televising the elites in ITU tri (Olympics, Commonwealth games, other events), they do show the transitions. It's pretty awesome and very fast-- way faster than I'd ever be able to do.

For those of us who are far from elite, I would not recommend riding out of transition with barefeet on the other side of the pedals and putting on bike shoes while riding.

(Unfortunately this is partly why Simon Whitfield crashed and DNF'ed in London 2012.)

Interesting link - thanks for posting it.
Maybe my perception is colored by his history but...
He radiates arrogance. He can't even be bothered to put his gear off to the side. At around 1:00 in T1 he throws his wetsuit onto the course. Then at 2:00 he does the same thing with his helmet.

I also noticed that in T1 he put his helmet on first, and then his sunglasses - to me this is the wrong order. I thought to myself that his glasses might come off with his helmet. Sure enough in T2 his sunglasses fly off his head when his helmet comes off. But it looks like he didn't wear sunglasses (or maybe a 2nd pair?) on the run so it didn't matter.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
