Subject: Cloudy pool?
Bored, so putting it out there in case anyone has any idea.....

Why would a pool suddenly turn cloudy? Water doesn't seem dirty or discolored, but has gone from very clear (on Saturday PM) to so opaque I could bately see the wall today. I had to count strokes to nail the turns. (No, not my goggles or my eyes.) I'm very sensitive to higher than normal chlorine levels (eyes, skin asthma) and it doesn't seem to be that. The water feels "softer" than normal, almost slippery. It almost seemed easier to swim through it than normal. (Not sure how else to put it. ) This pool's water seems to change in"feel" a lot, but it's never been opaque like that. No drastic changes in air or water temps, though it cooled off more than usual after a brief storm last night. Pool in question is indoors but some parts of the walls open to outside, so temp varies with the weather, but no rain can fall in it. Water is maybe around 80 or just below.

The way you describe the feel of the water it sounds like it is a salt water pool? If it is and they added salt(which you occasionally have to do) that could have caused it to cloud up.

Sounds like something changed the Ph level which could've been from the storm.  By the slippery feeling you noticed I am guessing some type of treatment was added to the water.  Maybe a non-chlorine shock explaining why you didn't notice a reaction.  Pure shot in the dark so to speak.

I think the only real explanation is that everybody in the pool peed at the same time.

Agreed that the pH to alkaline from more neutral would suggest a slippery-ness but in chemistry solutions are clear, so if it's cloudy maybe someone got it dirty

Not sure. Rain doesn't run into the pool so it shouldn't be from the storm. The guards were trying to figure out the source of the problem but hadn't yet. It wasn't any treatment they'd done. It's not a salt water pool--really wish it was as that doesn't trigger asthma and swimming would be 100X easier. But my first thought yesterday was it felt like salt water. They said no one had reported any irritation so it was still open last night. Wondering if it's something to do with our city supply--presumably there's some water exchange from that? Most of the area is built on reclaimed swamp next to tidal channels, and occasionally some salt water will get in. One of my cats (who drinks tap water) has been vomiting so wonder if that is the culprit.

Check your calcium levels also. Mine were off and it made my pool cloudy.

After checking Ca, check Phosphate levels. That's a common culprit.

The only other thing I can think of is if they backwashed the filter and stuff got washed back into the pool.

it sounds like it could be a lack of chlorine getting into the pool but their readings should tell them that. Lack of Ch wont irritate eyes etc but will leave slightly more contaminants in the water makeing it cloudy - if it remains it will turn a greenish tint soon!

They most likely added chlorine or other similar crystal. It's happened to me a few times, sometimes it's been so bad that I was literally swimming through actual crystals (I've since stopped going there!)

This seems to happen much less frequently in well-maintained pools, makes me wonder if it's a shortcut of some sort in lieu of proper pool maintenance.

Pool is back to normal today. Still not sure what it was-- it wasn't a treatment they had don-- but I had a chance to talk with a training buddy today--he'd swim before me on Monday, and had also noticed that despite the horrid visibility, we felt unusually buoyant and had fast times for the effort we were putting out. Who knows? Guess clear, slower water is preferable to cloudy, faster water!

Most of us belong to groups and there will always be pressure to keep up. It may be underlying or it may be outright, but no doubt, that pressure to go faster is always there.

Good swimming is relaxed swimming. Relaxed swimming depends on practicing the best techniques and the best body position.
