Subject: Music to my ears
I never listen to music when I train in the pool. I feel that people use music as a distraction and since during triathlons you can't listen to music, I think its best to get used to swimming for an extended period without using music as a crutch. I also find I do my best thinking and reflection in the pool because the lack of stimuli helps me to concentrate. Am I in the minority or do most people also not listen to music in the pool?

I've never used any sort of music player that allowed me to listen to music as I swam but I like it when the pool staff have the radio on.  Provides a brief moment of distraction during a rest interval.

Except when something like an annoying Taylor Swift song comes on and gets stuck in my head during an interval....

Same here. In the many many years I've been swimming, I've only seen a handful of people with the swiMP3s or whatever they're called. I usually have some song stuck in my head that ends up becoming a sort of chant to the rhythm of my stroke, but I don't purposely plan that.

In college, for some reason, "It's A Small World" would get stuck in my head during the distance events. Still not sure how it didn't drive me insane.

I listen to music when I swim.  You are probably right the majority do not.  Maybe 3 people at the pool I use do and it's fairly crowded.

I go in and out of listening to music in the pool. I have a feeling that I can probably focus more on my stroke/rhythm/etc. without it since I'm still pretty rough in the water, but man does it help the mental game. I lost my headphones a couple of weeks ago at the pool-- probably going to replace them and keep with on and off depending on the type of workout.

I just ordered a tempo trainer to put in my swim cap to develop a more consistent stroke rate that improves my speed and breathing rhythm - I can only imagine how music would throw me off even further. I used to listen to music when I ran, but if I did, I'd have to sync it up with whatever the training pace would be for that workout.
On bike?...in NYC? heck no, I need to hear everything, it's a dang jungle of danger out there on the bike

I listen to music when at the gym lifting or working on machines, treadmill, stepper etc. But never when outdoors or swimming. I want all the situational awareness I can get when sharing sidewalks and roads. I have been thinking of trying music when swimming as I think it might motivate me to go further and harder.

I love My music in the pool especially when doing long sets I also use music on runs as well, I know its not allowed during a triathlon but this has never really bothered me. I maybe miss it a bit on the run and usually end up doing tunes in my head but never in an OWS, there's too much other stuff going on in the swim, drafting avoiding getting kicked to death sighting, ect.

I have tried listening to music while swimming but it did not work for me. I found it distracting. It was cool the first couple of swims but it didn't stick.

I've never listened to music at the pool.

The only place I wear my iPod these days is at the gym, mostly so I don't have to talk to the creepy folks who workout there.
