I wouldn't necessarily say dislike, but I have a hard time determining exactly what my slow pace should be. Higdon says anywhere from 30-90 seconds slower than goal marathon pace. When I plug my 5k time into Jack Daniels it gives me an easy pace of 7:42-8:10, but when I use my half marathon pace it jumps to 8:10-8:42. I know the half marathon data is a better predictor for marathon performance, but when I start getting up over 8:15 it feels like my run mechanics change pretty dramatically and I actually feel like it's harder on my body than running a little faster, so I've been sticking around 7:45 for my easy pace. According to all the calculators that's probably a little on the fast side for my easy runs, but it feels comfortable and I can hold it for long runs (although I'll probably slow down when they start getting over 12-13 miles). I don't train with a HR monitor so I don't know if that pace puts me in the correct zone for endurance. I should probably get one.

McMillan shows a range of 7:06-8:19 min/mile for a long run given your recent 5k time (with a possible HM time of 1:26 and M time of 3:01). I don't recall what your recent HM time was, but McMillan does give a very wide range and your 7:45 is well within the ballpark. A heart rate monitor does give you another data point and a good reference for external factors that will limit your performance, i.e., temp and humidity.

Good point, I hadn't checked the McMillan paces. When I use my recent HM time it gives me a range of 7:23-8:24 for easy runs so I'm still right in that ballpark. On Monday I tried to slow it way down and strained my calf, so I think I'm better off sticking with what has been working.

Hope everyone is doing well!

I started last week with my training plan for the Marathon Des Sables, but having a hard time with all of the holiday parties down here.  Also  tried running with a backpack with light weight for the first time and so far its not much fun.  I'm hoping it becomes more comfortable with time.

Had to take a few days off last week to let my calf heal, then we were out of town for a family event in NJ this weekend. Managed to sneak in runs on both Saturday and Sunday while we were away. Weather both days was freakishly warm for NJ in mid-December, with Sunday topping out over 70.

I was syncing my watch today for the first time in about a week and noticed that somehow the GPS turned on and off several times while we were driving back from NJ to Massachusetts yesterday. According to my Garmin feed I have a 15-mile stretch where I averaged 48 seconds per mile!

Saturday 4 mi, Sunday 5.7 mi, Monday 3 mi (no point for Monday), Tuesday 5 mi. Yesterday was the official start of my 18 week training plan for Boston. Hopefully I can stay injury-free!

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
