(3) What perceived exertion level (scale of 1 to 10, 10 being hardest) do you think your rides are done at? (4) Are your rides pretty much at a solid state intensity or do you ride harder for stretches and then recover? The answers can help me drill down to a better answer. |

221 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Hey everyone, I've been traveling and not logging my workouts. Unfortunately I strained a muscle near my Achilles (or maybe it is my Achilles). Hoping to get back into a good rhythm again soon. BTW, big walking dead fan as well. That and The 100 (not nearly as good) are my trainer shows. I guess the post-apocalyptic world is good motivation for training... you know, to run away from zombies and such. Patrick |

There's another swimmer in the lane next to me. I hit 150M and see my wife and daughter standing on the deck at the end of my lane. I would really appreciate any pointers as this part I'm not seeing results like the run/swim. 1. Accurate for running. I didn't set them for the bike and I know that they can be different. 2. ooh I didn't know you could do that! 3. it varies. I spend a lot of time in spin class/spin bikes recently. Saturday was one of the first times I got outside in a month. I picked out the bike plan and added it to my schedule but I'm having difficultly following it. It says things like ride for 1 minute at 90% hr and then 30 second recovery at 60% hr and I can't get my HR down that fast. The plan intervals aren't really long enough for me to get my hr up where I know I get it for spin class. Here's a link to my Mondays/Tuesdays interval attempt: Here's what spin class looks like (Thursday night and Saturdays when weather sucks): when I get home I'll sync up and share my Saturday outside ride. 4. Ride harder for stretches and then recover. Hope the links work Thanks, Beth |

Read the following thread...at least the first few pages: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... I'll review your outdoor rides. Can you post some runs too to compare the HRs? How hard do you go in spin class? How long could you pedal with your HR north of 170? I think that was the peakish HR from your spin class. |

Master 1841 Sendai, Japan | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED I've mentioned my new bike a couple of times and am finally getting around to posting a photo. In case you missed my introduction email, one of the things I am planning to do this year is ride from the south of Japan to the north with a few friends (about 3400 km in 35 days; 30 days riding). I did not think my existing road bike was up to it and it is a pretty stiff ride too. My tri bike, of course, was out of the question. After lots of consideration, I ended up going with the Giant Defy Advanced Pro. It is built for endurance riding and yesterday's ride outside showed me just how different it is from my tri-bike. I am definitely using different muscles. (IMG_0493.JPG) Attachments ---------------- IMG_0493.JPG (1408KB - 3 downloads) |

Outside ride 15k running race I'm seeing that the HR on the bike has a lot more variation than the inside rides. I can see the stop lights and coasting. Is it a matter of finding roads with less stop lights and not coasting down hill? Its funny that I didn't notice that until you asked to see them. Also I really get my HR up when I stand up and really pump my legs but I don't see the folks in the fancy cycle gear standing--ever. Thanks, Beth |

353 Conroe, Texas | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Originally posted by Sillygal Dan - Nice bike! Does it always live in your dining room? My new tri bike lived in my living room on the trainer for the first two weeks just so I could stare at it during commercial breaks. I'm not saying that this is what Dan is doing but it is a nice bike...Nice lines.....easy on the eyes! Speaking of the new bike, I had my fit done yesterday and I was really impressed with the guy that did it. Tad Hughes Custom Studios in Houston did the fit, he also has studio in Austin where he is for two days of the week. Anyway, The first hour of the 2 hour fit felt like I was at the doctors office getting a physical. He measured everything, I learned one foot is slightly larger then the other, one leg is longer then the other, and that I have very tight hamstrings.(Shocker). He gave me a very thorough fit and I do believe it will be worth the money. Now if it would only stop raining so I could ride it outside. Edited by sawyer1206 2015-02-25 8:52 AM |

Thanks, Beth Beth, I'm not able ot get the link to the run race to work. When you do your 30 minute run test, where does your threshold HR come out? I would recommend that you do a 30 minute test on a bike. You could do it on a spin bike since you are focusing on HR. It should come in about 10 beats below your run threshold HR. Training by HR on the bike can be difficult because of the lag in HR - either in the way up or way down. Certainly you could use it quite effectively for longer intervals. The other recommendation is to find folks that are faster than you by a bit and ride religously with them. It will force you to get faster. |
