Veteran 1900 Southampton, Ontario | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Originally posted by markz And another 5hr trail run/walk this morning. Hot, humid and then rain, lovely. I must say this trail running is a completely different animal, specially with full 2l hydration bag and Food on your back. Today the trail included around 1000m elevation gain, 16 creek crossings and muddy trail. i have done a few trail run races and it certainly is a really different experience than road runs but 5hrs is something i cant fathom.good on you though. |

Expert 1480 Somewhere in the Swamps of Philly | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Been MIA due to biz travel and life. I'm finding greater opportunities to double up the workouts, but am finding that I need more rest in between - go figure. Adding in last week's workouts. Taking the family to Arizona at the end of week(Scottsdale, Sedona and the Grand Canyon) for Spring Break - temps in Scottsdale should be in the 90s - should make for some interesting training. I'm slowly getting closer to scheduling some Tris. @Jackie - big props for gutting out that marathon. I've had that cramping before and there's no a damn thing you can do when it sets in. For me, walking seemed to make worse but that was the only option I had. I'm at the point where I've decided that I can't race a marathon anywhere near I'd like to be so I have decided not to race them. Might certainly do one to pace a friend or as part of an IM. @Markz - 5-7 hr trail runs sound insane. You will have to share your wisdom with @gabe as he readies himself for MdS. @Dave - new bike pics! 50 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED It feels like forever since I posted here. =( I hope everyone has been well! I have something I've been wondering about for a while now, and would really appreciate advice on. The training program I'm currently using is one from this site, and has been working fairly well. The thing is, it's building up to a sprint triathlon, and I'm not planning to do any until next year. Would it be better to put together my own program, and work on just building base, until I actually have a triathlon in sight? I think that would allow me to go ahead and start working towards running. Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED 1:56:39 on the drainer ISLAGIATT Jackie- Sadly no. It was the first year, but it required two crossings of the main highway with the bike or 3 on foot to have that as the run turn around. For safety it was changed to a boring out and back run through town and a jack pine swamp. The upside is, it is a couple of miles from my house and I get to run to it on most days. The bike for the HIM is our trade off. It is very secluded through the national forest. It also has very little traffic. I am biased though. 123 | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Ellen, I was in a similar position last year. I started off with my own plan based on beginner 5k running plans and trying to build up consistency week by week. I was running twice a week for a total of 5 miles and swam once a week and built that up. It took a long time and more than a few set backs where I just got tired of it but eventually I got to where I was going my logs should be open. Check out January 2014 and see how I just added and added slow and steady. And then I think in March/April I quit for a minute. You would probably do better than me if you could get a coach or join 1 of the clubs. What are you planning to do when you get a triathlon in sight? I've got a question for the group. The bottom of my feet are getting sore while running. Does this mean it might be time to change out my shoes? I've got 4-500 miles on mine but the soles are still attached and shoes are expensive! Thanks, Beth |

I would also skip a race specific training plan and work on just building consistency in all 3 disciplines. The you can focus on volume and race specific workouts. I think running is the toughest to build volume due to the amount of impact on the body. I would approach it as trying to build consistency in your running and then add volume. For example, start out with a short distance (1 mile? 2 miles?) and try to run three days a week. Once you get consistent at running three days then add a fourth day. Then I would take oneof the days and add a bit more distance (follow the 10% rule - total weekly volume shouldn't increase by more than 10% per week). Over time you can build your volume and add more days if desired. |

Thanks, Beth rule of thumb is ~350 miles per pair, but is really open to each persons preferences. I usually swap out shoes in 400 mile range. If you are getting aches and pains and the only thing from a running perspective that has changed is the mileage on your shoes (i.e. same volume and intensity in your runs) then its probably the shoes. |

It also depends on where you are running. The more treadmill time I have the more life my shoes get. My knees tell me when it is time. When they hurt, I need new shoes. I normally buy in the Spring, I look for last years model, I live in Northern Michigan where fashion is flannel, run all Summer, then use them on the treadmill in the Winter. I get you about the expense. What I do is run the life out of them, buy new shoes and wear the old ones around. The upper is usually is great condition, so the shoes still look good, I just can't run in them. The other thing I have done is donated them to shoes for Africa. |
