Subject: How much faster are Conti GP 4000s
Seen/read all the data (including on this awesome forum) & these tires rock. I get it. Still, what does all this mean for, say a 40K TT. Victorria Rubino Pro's are less than half the price!

Having recently upgraded my tri & roadie wheels (Flo 30' & 60's), i.e., sleepoing on the couch, I am wondering what the extra cash will get me, i.e., is sleeping on the porch worth it?

The best tire I've used (trained/race) the Michelin P3's. Huge ride quality digference from, say, Victoria Zaffrino's.

I'm not sure, because 3 years ago my (much faster) teammate put a ton of research time into tires before IM CDA and basically 11 of us made the move to Conti GP 4000.  Never looked back.  Durable & fast.  What else matters?

Basically, 6 watts of CRR, then whatever the aero differences are. (the gp4ks, generally is pretty slick)

When you buy the tires, get them from the uk. on sites such as probikekit.com or wiggle.com They will take about a month to ship but if you buy them soon enough and just stockpile them your good to go. Why pay 75$ in store when you can get it right now for 39$ a piece. I check every so often and when they go on sale i have gotten them for 34$ a piece. Now i am a huge proponent of supporting local bike shops but for this huge of a difference I'm sorry. I have used this site and others plenty of times and so have a lot of my buddies. Its worth checking out. and will save you probably 60-75$.

Here are the tires for 39$

I have probably seen it several times in the past, but can someone tell me roughly what relationship there is between watts of drag and speed (specifically, time cost per km per watt or 10 watts...)?

I don't know how much faith I have in the actual speed number because it ultimately comes down to how hard I am pedaling and it's nearly impossible to keep that variable static when you're talking about a variance of ~5-10 watts but you can just plug your numbers into a site like bikecalculator.com. It'll at least give you 2 numbers for comparison.

It is variable. I've gotten them as quick as seven days or as slow as 28. I think it all depends on whether some customs inspector decides to look at a shipment......

I've bought several 4000S's from PBK also. 4 days (yes really) to about 3 weeks has been my window. I'm on East Coast.

I forgot where I got all the following from:

  • Rule of thumb: 0.1 lbs (50 g) of drag (at 30 mph) = 0.5 s/km = 5 W = 0.005 m^2 CdA = 0.0005 Crr 
  • At 30 mph:  At the same power output, a 7.3 Watt savings would be a .22 mph increase from 30 mph to 30.22 mph  This is 22 seconds saved over 40 km (10W savings would be 0.30 mph faster or 30 seconds saved) 
  • At 24.86 mph (40 kph):  At the same power output, a 4.1 Watt savings would be a 0.18 mph faster  This is 26 seconds saved over 40 km (10W savings would be 0.44 mph faster or 63 seconds saved) 
  • At 20 mph:  At the same power output, a 2.2 Watt savings would be a 0.15 mph faster  This is 33 seconds saved over 40 km (10W savings would be 0.68 mph faster or 150 seconds saved)

I just picked up a set of Continental Grand Prix's for $35 each, but they don't have the 4000 designation. Does anyone know if these are a similar tire?
