Subject: Knee injury-what would you do?
In my four years of triathlon I have never had an injury so I don't really know how to handle it. I was doing some hard intervals on the bike trainer when I felt a twinge of pain on the outside of my knee. I've felt little things like this before and usually just keep going and it goes away. But this one just got worse so I quit. I let it rest a couple of days and tried again but it was still there. I ran a couple of times with no pain at all. I then decided to give it a week of complete rest. I hopped on trainer today and felt ok for about 20 minutes then it hit again. It doesn't hurt when I'm just walking around and I can run and it doesn't bother it at all. So my question is this: If it doesn't hurt at all when I run, would you just keep running easy for a couple of weeks and stay off bike, or would you give it complete rest for a couple of weeks then try again? I hate not doing anything. What would you do?

If the running really doesn't bother it then keep running- and try to adjust your seat height to get rid of the discomfort while cycling. It sounds like maybe you are too low.

I second that...but put emphasis on "sports" doctor. An old saying that has always stuck in my head is about the three D's that can sideline you really quick when you're a runner, so you have to be very cautious about them: Drivers, Doctors and Dogs. If you go to your general practitioner you'll likely get a blanket, "six weeks of rest" that they'll toss out there without having the slightest clue what's wrong. To be the Devil's advocate, six weeks of rest will likely do it too, but it will sideline your training, which is the part that can be ignored. One better than a sports doctor, is a sports doctor that is actually an athlete...you wouldn't take your car to a mechanic who's vehicle doesn't run, so why go to a doctor that's breathing heavy just from opening a chart?

You may have the tension (or gears) too tight while on the trainer. Maybe back off some or least until you warmed up for a good twenty or thirty minutes. I get knee pains on the trainer but don't have any issues riding outside on roads.

At my age (50) knee pains come and go. I had one surgery about 12 years ago was told not to run anymore at that time. I took the advixe and gained about 50 pounds. Changed my lifestyle five years ago and lost the 50 pounds. Started on the triathlon and haven't stopped running since.

In addition to chatting with a sports doc, check your cleats.  Sometimes they slip out of alignment a bit, so you might need to fix it and screw it back down.  Pain on the side of your knee makes me suspicious that your foot isn't lined up properly.

You don't need a doctor so much as a physical therapist. Chances are you've been building up to this for a while now, and those hard intervals just pushed you over the edge.  You could have an IT band problem, or a hip flexor problem, or a glute problem - all can turn into knee pain. If those problems are range of motion or flexibility, then rest isn't going to fix that.

I'm a big fan of ART trained PTs.  Some PTs are scammers, most are not.  Read local reviews on Yelp, and so on, as you would usually research service providers.

Better to spend a few dollars to get it checked out and find out it is nothing than continue on and aggravate an injury.

Could be a bike fit issue as well. Sports med doc is best Avenue to get s diagnosis. A good PT who works with athletes and is an athlete is another option. Some PTs offerr free evales and will let you know of PT can help or odd you should see a an ortho.
