How fun

....I ran with Lili before my knees were replaced; she'd always look up at me like "when are we going to go fast?"....I was moving as fast as I could; so now, it's strictly walking and I still get the same look from both of them....like...."well"??....They were a handful on Tuesday...wired! only got in 2 miles.

sorry for the unexplained absence. I've been down in the dumps. I ran the 5k two weeks ago at 32 minutes (which is not a sub-30). SIGH! I was bummed and really I was surprised at how much not meeting my goal affected me. I ran 3 miles which aint bad, but to set a goal and fail just really sucked (I know that sounds really absurd but whatever, somehow somewhy I became really negative).

I have a race on 7/16 that I've considered skipping and just focusing on my 8/30 race but I'm going to do it. No expectations except to swim the whole time, bike the whole time and run the whole time. That's fair. that's a HUGE accomplishment for me and it's entirely possible. This is fun, a unique way to exercise. it's not anything to get upset about. I'm a dope for being so bummed about running a 5k in 32 minutes. It's 1 minute per mile faster than I typically run so I'm proud of that! And I'm hoping to try to get some speed running in too. just need to figure out when.

also I've also packed on 10 lbs. which really annoys me but it's the cookies, beers, junk food that I know I can't eat and stay my weight. and I know that affected my 5k time. sigh

And I've been slacking on my workouts. I'm running, but I just don't care/like it right now. I'm biking at spin class and I'm not really swimming since I'm being a bit cocky that it's not a big concern of mine, the swimming. But hello! I need to do some swimming! And I need to push harder on the bike and the runs- ugh, I still don't love it but at least I'm still doing it.

So i'm back on track--- i think. i'm biking on my trainer in the basement durning naptime. I'm using the weekend to run and bike and I'm trying ot figure out some swimming. i borrowed a wetsuit from a friend so I'll give that a go tonight. hopefully this propels me back into race-training mode. (and weight loss mode!)

Welcome back!! I understand about backing off on workouts....I'm only getting walks in this week while I dog sit and take care of a painting project; hope to get back to the pool and bike next week. Congrats on the 5K!! That's a good time and you were quicker than in the past! Hope the swim goes well; I'm to borrow a friend's tri suit this Sunday and get an open water swim in with him...at least that's been discussed.fd Holiday may impact that. Hang in there!!!!

Figures I have heard (and use) are your run times are affected 2 sec per mil per pound. So 10 lbs over a 5k is a minute. Clean up the "junk" and you are that much closer to your goal. (he says as he is thinking he is 20lbs over his old race weight and no wonder he doesn't feel like running right now)

Beautiful dogs Bill
Colleen hang in there.
I think your goal of running the whole time, swimming, and biking the whole time a good goal.
One I might just use.
I got on the bike again on Tuesday and rode a section of my tri bike ride. It was good to conquer those climbs again. 6% inclines.
I'm missing my workouts and feeling guilty about it. I have cut my calories back to 1200 unless I work for more. I have dropped some weight in the process I just need to get back on track with working out. This next week I'm on vacation and my boys are at soccer camp for 3 hours. That sounds like a perfect time to workout and get back on track. I think I will do my original plan of Greenville August 23rd. There is a ride for cancer research August 29th.
My son(11) is working on the cycling merit badge in scouts and needs to finish it up with 50 miles. He is a bit rreluctant about it. My encouraging mom words were do you want me do it with you? So I guess I am going to train for that. If we got our training in we can ride 60 miles on the cancer ride. Wow did I just say that?? I have to plan it out.
Have a safe and exciting 4th

So I just looked at it and basically training for this ride is the ride of a Half ironman. Wow. So we will ride 3 days a week. Not bad, one 45 minute speed ride, 1 -1hour steady ride and a long ride with 30-35 miles ( we will have to work into that) My son Alex and I are both at 25 miles for our longest ride. I think we might be about the same level as well. I am going to bring my youngest James with us on the steady ride. He needs to get more miles under his belt to get his confindence up. I am looking to swim 2 days a week and walk/ run the dog another day. I guess I needed a harder crazy goal. It is interesting what I'm willing to do for my kids.

How exciting.

So I did an open water swim clinic on wednesday with my friend's wetsuit and gave me a little of my swagger back. There were 7 of us and in the 'races' we did, I edged out the leader both times! I felt like a competitor and that felt good. and might have given me the bump to get back into things. I also put a broadcast out to my friends to see if anyone wants to relay a sprint tri with me and a friend might do the bike, i'll swim and run (ugh). Anyway, having someone else involved might push me a bit harder too. Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

That is great Colleen. It has been a bit hard for me to get back into it. I'm glad you have your swagger back.

I got in the pool today, for a short swim. Yes I'm a bit rusty. Only got 500 yd in. That is more than nothing at all so that is always a plus.

Good for you!!!! Just like you found joy and encouragement out of this work, you need to just learn not to let things like your lesser 5k knock you down. It's funny how some times we almost find our faults easier than our plus. I know for me I got another little boost with the start of the Tour de France (it just pumps me up and makes me wanna ride).

Weather and schedules have played havoc this week with training; managed 3 swim sessions and 1 weight session (hope to get to the gym this afternoon);

If weather breaks enough we'll get a ride in; so the last two weeks have not been as active as before. Swim today was good but, need to do better.

Good luck to all!

How'd the weekend go?

I didn't quite get in what I planned on the training front, but overall it was a productive weekend with some good family time thrown in too.

Did 2 rides in the 22-24 mile range. My long ride is coming up this weekend followed by volunteering at a sprint tri on Sunday

I had a good weekend. I didn't get in the weights like I was thinking. I planned to do a ride on Saturday but it got pushed to Sunday. I took my son on my tri ride I did for my event. It has rolling hills. We made it a 16 mile event.
I'm excited, I have my groove back. I was just talking to my husband and he rode 5 days this week and got in 100 miles of training. My groove is catching. We got some new tape on the boys handlebars had a demo in changing a tube, ordered some new cycling clothes. I love when tax refunds come in. It sparked some interest in our children to get out and ride a bit more. They are catching it too. I got a swim and ride in today with my children in tow. I go back to work tomorrow. My husband and I plan to do yoga tomorrow evening. It is my off for training. I have days off with my new training schedule I'm on. I'm using one to train for an Olympic triathlon heavy on the bike. I figure that will keep me ready for my sprint in August 23 and get my son and I on track for the 60 miles August 29. My husband and youngest ride in that one too. The whole family is doing a midnight flight run of 5K September 4. I have those 3 weekends all booked. I feeling like I can do the Hincapie Race in October. My husband said he will see how he does on the 5 k and that will determine if starts to train for a triathlon.
I'm pleased with how healthy and active we are becoming. My sons just finished half day soccer camp.
Sorry I guess I'm a proud mama.
Good luck in your ride.

Hello. Sorry for being MIA for a while. Life and work have been overwhelming. Trying to get training in as well is tough.
I had injured my shoulder and wrist and had to stop swimming. I have been doing lots of walking and slow runs.

I did a half marathon this past Sunday. It was absolutely a gorgeous view but I had an absolutely HORRIFIC run.
It was in NYC. I walked a lot on Saturday to and from my friend's apt to get to packet pickup, race course, dinner, etc. I did 20,057 steps which is about 8-9 miles for me. On Sunday was my race. My left foot (shattered ankle 3 yrs ago) gave out at mile 8. Walking hurt so much but running hurt slightly less. I jogged slowly in pain for the last 5 miles. It was horrible. After the finish line, I went to the medic to get my foot wrapped in ice. After waiting for the ice to numb my foot, I walked 1.5 miles back to my friend's place.

4 days later, my ankle is still swollen. Waiting to get an MRI and CT of my ankle to see if the hardware (8 screws/1 plate) are causing any tissue inflammation.

Tracy congrats on finishing and doing so through the pain. I hope it turns out alright on the Ct and Mri

Checking in after a long hiatus with a follow up. The ankle specialist was so full, I had to wait 6 weeks for an appointment.
During that time, my ankle swelled on and off. Painfully sore after hours of walking or standing (kids sports).
Apparently, the tenderness, soreness and swelling were due to bone spurs, arthritis and tendonitis.
The bone spurs are in the front of the ankle like a door stopper so I can't lift my foot off the ground.

Recommendation:
surgery to remove
no high impact sports (no running! )
Do biking, swimming, walking, etc.

I may be able to run very short distances after surgery but may have pain afterwards.

Needless to say, I withdrew from both my duathlon and triathlon. I was having sharp pain sporadically in my ankle that cause me to stop or lose my balance. I was too afraid to ride my bike with that going on.

Spring/Summer is my family's busiest season and fall is our down time.
There is no way, I am recovering over the winter. Crutches and ice is a no, no.
I will likely have surgery the end of summer.

Just wanted to give you guys an update.

I just got in a 30.5 mile ride today with my husband and some riding buddies. Then did a quick transition and ran for .66 of a mile (10 minutes) Wow I was feeling the ride. I jumped into the pool after all that to relax all the muscles. This was a good push. I needed to get out and "spread my wings" I was learning how to fuel for such a long ride. I ride with Alex tomorrow for 80 minutes. I got in 51.3 miles so far this week, 2 swims and 2 burst of running. It feels good getting out and going.

Enjoy your weekend.

Great week of training! Congrats!!

Only managed 1 swim, 1 weight lifting session; and a ride yesterday in the past week..... . Had to have a second floor structural repair finished up last week....ended up with a 6 ft x 16 ft section of our first floor ceiling removed in order to correct the problem; drywall work was wrapped up Saturday am; now on to the painting! Should be able to be consistent this week on training since I don't have to be here for contractors.

Oldest son had a bunch of parts from bikes he's reassembled over the past couple years; so he bought a frame on line and assembled a road bike for me; rode it for the first time yesterday; he did a great job; only a few minor adjustments so far; will need to ride it more; I was quite surprised and the difference in feel of this bike compared to my Trek Hybrid; he's wanting me to do some longer rides with him;

Have a great week everyone!!

How cool to have a bike engineer.
I'm glad you are getting your house back together. I hear it is crazy to live through all the dust.

I finished off last week with a 25 mile ride on Sunday. So excited for how many I did. I got in 76 miles last week. I rode a short ride with both my boys, 8 1/2 miles. I thinking about another quick ride tonight. Then on Thursday ride with a group 18-35 miles. Saturday I'm hiking with scouts down in Georgia. Then get in another ride on Sunday a long one. I'm focusing on cycling this week. I'm feeling the deadline we have 5 1/2 weeks to go.

Have a good training everyone.

Tracy sorry to hear about the news.

I have been enjoying the past couple of weeks with the family at the beach and just around the house. I have managed to get in a few runs and a few rides as well as a lot of kayaking / fishing time.

I have got to get things kicked back off and in a hurry because my Half Ironman Distance ran if just over two months away. I tell you that I am finding it almost as difficult these days to pay for events / hotels as I am trying to find time to train for the races.

Okay, still not a well written and thorough recap of my Tour de Steamboat, but it is what it is right now

Overall this was a great day. The climb up Rabbit Ears pass was a lot longer then I expected. I put it in my smallest gear right away and just kept turning them over all the way up. I did pass a lot more people than passed me. For the longest time I was turning the pedals over about 70 rpm. Took 1:53 to get to the first aide station at just 22+ miles. Coming out of the aide station I did knock off the next 4 miles in about 8 minutes.
Fun rolling down to the turn for Gore Pass. The road was freshly oiled so there was a distinct smell. I ended up stopping twice on the climb to get something to eat and stretch. This was definitely bike "touring" mentality and not race mentality. Took over 4 hrs of ride time to hit the halfway point aide station at 56 miles. I was so wanting another gear going up Gore Pass, I was spinning between 50 and 60 rpm at some points and when I normally spin 92-96 - welllllll...

After the quick descent, I encountered cramps in the hamstrings across the valley and again going up the last true "climb".

Between the 70 and 90 mile aide station I was facing a cross/headwind and it was chilly. I almost added the sleeves back on.
Finally picked up a small pace group about a mile before turning and getting a tail wind. At the 90 mile aid station was a little challenging getting back in the saddle, then we encounter one more "Longish" climb. I was pretty much done then. I could spin the flats and down hills but any uphill was a drastic drop in pace and energy.

Got up early again the next morning and headed over to Steamboat Lake State park (about 5 miles from where we were camping) to volunteer for the Steamboat Lake Sprint Tri (I was in no way prepared to race it and my legs were trashed - just riding to the bathroom at our campground had my quads talking to me on Sunday - I know - TMI).
I got to do body marking, talk with some folks doing their first tri, talk to a volunteer who's first tri is in a month, and generally get excited about the concept of doing a triathlon again. The, as transition was closing I was shuttled out to the bike turnaround and got to direct auto traffic - along with a deputy from Routt County on the other direction, point out the turnaround cone - much to the delight of many - they put it on a hill but not all the way at the top - and just encourage folks as they made the turn.
The car following the last cyclist picked me up and I rode back to the start with him. It was amazing the perseverance of the couple of folks we followed. By the way - make sure you bike fits and is set up for you when you ride - even if it is borrowed, and learn, know how to use your gears - it will make your day that much more enjoyable - even if it is a heavy 29er- just some observations watching the last couple. They got off and walked but kept moving forward. They never looked back at the car and made it back to transition in plenty of time, and they all started the run.

Great Ride, Great Report, Great Observations. I certainly have to get in a century in the next four months or so if I want to do an Ironman distance next year. Gotta see what it feels like and how I'm gonna feel after it as a baseline and experience of knowing I can.
