Got a power meter question for you guys:  I was doing a brutal climb yesterday at the end of my ride -- average cadence was 39 and speed was 4.2 mph....quads were ready to burst the seams on my shorts as they were working so hard, so feeling like I must be putting down some pretty good power....PM says I did 112W.  WTF?  That's like a warm-up / recovery....this does NOT feel like warm-up or recovery.

So what's the deal?  PM reading wrong?  Calculation get jacked up with such low cadence?  I had back pedaled shortly before the climb and the numbers had been making sense throughout the day for the most part (though, for the life of me, I feel like it's reading 10-15W lower than it used to, but that may just be that my fitness still sucks despite good training since mid-January).

With the way my legs were feeling, I just can't believe I was only doing 112W.  Thoughts?

Had a fun weekend of riding -- 448 TSS points over 120 miles (80 miles and 5165' of climbing on Saturday alone).  Low volume run week, but I'm pretty okay with that.  Now to recover....and consider power testing in another week or so.

Nicole, I had a similar experience last year.  Climbing up a section averaging 14% for half a mile.  Cadence was at 44 rpm and power was at 219 watts despite my HR being pegged and my legs on fire.  219 is roughly what I can sustain for 3-4 hours...the effort felt more like 320 watts.  To me it seems that the power is accurate, but we are both wasting a ton of energy during the dead spots of our pedal stroke.  From 11 o'clock to 2 o'clock we generate very little power and if our cadence is that slow we waste a lot of energy turning the cranks over at those points.

I would drop it into aerolab and see if the "virtual elevation", calculated from power and speed, matches the real elevation.

Well, out of complete necessity I've pretty much abandoned my boycott of the treadmill.  I thought last winter was bad but this one is worse.  Our total snowfall for the winter is 463 cm which is over 15 feet!  Last week was feeling rather spring like but yesterday and today have brought us back to reality.

Ugh. My treadmill boycott has been going on for (I think) two years and four months. Of course, it's a lot easier to boycott it in a tropical country.

I keep thinking that too. Plus pedaling a lot faster or slower than we're used to tends to be less effective so it seems harder to do the same thing. And, well, it kind of is.

That is insane! I guess at this point you need to be thankful for the treadmill.

It's not quite 15' but I found about 3 on Saturday. My legs are a little iceburned

I have signed up for a half marathon next Sunday to redeem last weekend's DNS.  And one that will put my hill training to good use, apparently

Elevation looks about right for that.

It's test week for me - all across the board.  Today was a 20min run test, and since it was March break I was able to get out to a high school track and run it there.  Pretty windy conditions, so I got the benefit for half the track, and pummeled a bit for the other half.  Glad I don't do a lot of these tests because I was redlined during the test.

Managed a 19:52 for 5km, and considering the lack of running (less than 400km since beginning of Nov), a few pounds over race weight, and that it's only March, this gives me some confidence that as the running ramps up over the coming weeks I'll be in decent form entering race season.

The swim tests are unlikely to net a positive result tomorrow as I haven't been able to find my stroke for the past couple of months.

Decent form?  Yow...

Very nice result.  Curious to hear how the other tests go!
