Half marathon October 17th

And then this winter is all about getting really lean, eating really clean and not having to carb load or bulk for endurance reasons!

Hoping to drop 20-25lbs by the start of next race season in April.

Nice! Looks like a great way to end the season!

glad to see everyone back. I hurt my knee doing a silly fall on my bike that ruined my whole year. So I threw up my hands and reverted to bad habits. Yah, that helped! (heavy sarcasm).  I have been doing the bare minimum of training, but I have started to get my second wind. Having this support thread back will help.

FWIW, the MCM has got to be the best marathon ever. Amazing support the entire way. I did the 10 K, which is the last 6 miles of the marathon, and it was awesome. The hubbie and I were training for the marathon when his cancer surgery de railed us. With the lottery, there is no way for us to get to do it together so it is not gonna happen for us.

Mike, The B2B is an amazing race, too. I love that area and was thinking, If I actually do my HIM in Fla on April 2, 2016, I may sign up for the half there. Be fun to have a compadre there.

Great to see everyone back.

Robin - keep trying the lottery. I have a married couple friends that both got in. I keep saying this'll be my first and last marathon. We'll see what I say after I finish (insert positive thinking here)

Not a clue. But if Mike is shooting for it and Robin is considering it, why not give myself 14 months to train the run instead of a measly 9? Also with them that far apart, I might be able to convince the boss that a sprint in May (for the PR), and a HIM in Oct is feasible

As for how the B2B course is, I used to live just north of Wilmington when I was in the Corps. The best description I can give you is "flat and fast". The biggest climb you are going to see in the entire race is the bridges over the ICW. Other than that, a "big" hill in the area might be a 50' climb over the course of a half mile or more. Coming from the Adirondacks of NYS I remember seeing signs declaring hills or maps, and looking around trying to see hills

I love the idea of a BT Clyde/Athena contingent! You guys just helped me decide which race is going to be my "A" race for 2016.

Okay, today is the hardest kind of day for me. It's a rest day. Ive worked out six straight days so I know I need it, but it feels like I'm being lazy and backsliding.

Hope y'all have great workouts.

Take advantage of the rest day, your body needs it. Do some light activity, take a walk, enjoy the day!

I had a rest day yesterday and ending up doing 3-4 hours of yard work. i think I need a rest day after my rest day!

My biggest struggle right now is dragging my butt out of bed at 5am to workout. I don't know what it is, I know I have to, but it's so hard and too many mornings I roll over, reset the alarm and go back to sleep. I forced myself this morning to get up. Did 45 easy minutes on the trainer. I feel good about it, hopefully tomorrow is easier.

On a positive note, I jumped on the dreaded scale this morning. Down 1 pound to 242.2. That's 5 straight weeks of weight loss and down almost 9 lbs. from 5 weeks ago.

I agree completely. I only run 3 days a week. I'm trying to walk at least 1.2mi on the other 4 days. Not only does it help with calorie burn, but it also logs miles for the challenge

Hello everyone.

I'm as guilty as anyone for this thread going quiet, but it's good to see life here again.

I have been trucking along, without making as much progress as I'd like. I've been running regularly, 5-6 times a week for the last 4 or 5 months. But my weightloss really stalled during the middle of the year. So, the last few weeks the wife and I have refocused on what we eat, I don't know if I'd go as far as to call it a crash diet, but we are really limiting our food. Mainly salads, veges and lean meats, about 1200-1500 cal/day target. And its working, over the last month the weight has really started coming off again, I'm now at 26lbs down for the year. almost half of that coming in the last month.

This is a big week for me, I got one of my bikes back from the friend I had lent it too on the weekend, tonight I'm reinstating my pedals, the trainer tire and giving her a general clean/service and Wednesday back onto the trainer for my first ride in over a year! Finally, I'm below the max rider weight for my bike. So soon, I'm going to be back into multisport mode.

Despite my total lack of fitness, I feel that I am making big strides and I'm getting very close to pulling the trigger on a HIM for this summer. I've gone as far as booking some accommodation at the race venue (Wanaka is a small town, and there already isn't much left)

It sounds like we may have a clyde half ironman training group going to be happening here.

Exciting times.

bullfrog - Congrats on getting the bike back and returning to multi-sport mode. I'm not sure that 1500 kcal per day is enough for a Clyde in training. You might want to check with a nutritionist on that. I'd probably try to eat whatever the kcal limit is for your goal weight, then consider the deficit between current weight and goal plus training to be sufficient to lose.

As y'all know, yesterday was a rest day. But I had a full day anyway. I went to the range with a buddy of mine and shot up a box of 20ga shotgun shells, a box of .357 magnums, a box of .38 Specials, and a 50 rounds of .22 just for fun. A - I had a LOT of fun. B - I really need to get back and practice more. I'm not even sure I could qualify right now.

Then in the evening I was in heaven. I spent about 90 minutes on the bottom of a pool completing my last Confined Water dive for my scuba certification. We do our first two open water dives Wednesday afternoon, the second two Sunday morning, and by dinner time Sunday I will have realized another of my life-dreams. I will be open water dive certified for scuba. I'm telling you, there is nothing like not having to come up for air. Can't wait for spring and some time in the Keys.

Day 7 of 19 - Run 18m 53s 1.06 miles 17m 48s /Mi
Dropped the truck off at the mechanic and then hoofed it home for my workout today. Not entirely sure whether I will hoof it back when the truck is done or not. It was humid! (For a northern boy, I'm sure you TN people have it much worse. Actually, I just checked it, and I'd say 85% is humid in anybody's book.)

The first 4 or 5 minutes were really just doping along as I was walking on what we call "river rock gravel", dirt road with lots of plum sized rocks lying on top of it. Real easy to turn an ankle in that stuff and I really want to avoid that. Still, the race walking got my pace to about 4mph avg for most of the walk.

Robin - My big problem is that I don't know what leisurely is. I mean, I start out that way, but then that 21 yr old jarhead in my head starts calling cadence and screaming for more effort and I just naturally start responding. Low and slow is a real problem for me.

That just made me laugh! Take a camera and make sure you take a picture every 5 minutes. You have to stop, or at least slow down to do that.

I'm looking into Challenge Atlantic City 70.3 as a possibility for next year. Registration is not open yet, so there's nothing to book yet.

Pros:
Close to home
Flat, back-bay swim
June date so most training before it gets too hot
If they run the full on the same day then there's only a cutoff at mile 28 of the bike

Cons:
It's 70.3 freakin miles
June could be hot
Run on the AC boardwalk with lots of "non-race" spectators and pedestrians
Did I mention, it's 70.3 miles

The race is February 20, the half option of challenge Wanaka (http://www.challenge-wanaka.com/) It will be a challenging course, and a big enough challenge just to get my fitness levels up enough in 6 months, but what the hell, aim high.

Although I'd like to be setting PB's, the goal for this (if it goes ahead) will be to finish, not worry about my time from the 70.3 a few years ago.

Yep, I figure if it's been a few years since your last HIM,then the goal for this one should just be to finish. Heaven knows that will be all I'm interested in at B2B.

BONUS ROUND!!
Run #2 22m 1.01 miles 19m 48s /Mi

Workout 8 of 19? - Maybe. Walked back down to pick up my truck from the mechanic. 92* temp and 95% humidity. KILLER! But I did manage to do it "slow"-ish.

hehehe... I am a northern boy in TN. Relocated here from Seattle in 92 (post USMC). As far as the humidity goes, I just wear a wicking shirt under my uniform at work, and of course all my workout gear wicks moisture as well. There's been more than one run and bike where I've been able to literally wring sweat out of my clothes!

I have to agree, this is starting to look like the Clyde/Athena HIM thread, lol! The only part I'm sweating :rimshot: is the run. It's hard to get myself off my arse to run. I'll swim and bike all bleeding day long... I just don't like running... no matter how effective it is

Rick, I'm in a similar boat. I have NEVER liked running, not even in the Corps. Last week I tried race walking and it seemed to help. In fact, I turned in better times walking after one week than I did walk/trotting last season. I looked it up online, there are people who can race walk a marathon in under 3:30, and 10 min miles are not uncommon among race walkers.

Day 8 of 18 - Bike 21m 43s 4.50 miles 12.43 Mi/hr 87* 85%h
First of all, I miscounted. There are only 18 possible workout days left in August, if I allow one rest day per week. Second, I waited until 6pm because I was hoping for good news today, but did not receive it. When I realized I wasn't going to get it I got bummed, and then I went for a bike ride to clear my head. Didn't have Cindy along so I was able to force it a little more, and brought my speed up to 12.4. Still slow, but then again, I'm pushing 35 more pounds than I was when I was doing it in under 20m.

Found an interesting website, Beginners Marathon Walking Schedule. It's designed for a 3-4mph pace.

Personally, I think I am going to aim for a 5mph race pace, but check it out. This guy has it broken down to only 18 weeks to be marathon ready. Sort of makes our plans look more achievable, doesn't it.

Losing fat is not difficult. So why does this continue to be an elusive goal for so many people, who “struggle” just to lose a few inches?
