Randi, welcome back!! I had been wondering where you were but was afraid to ask for fear it could be a tender subject. May I suggest you look into racewalking? Maybe even talk to your ortho about it. That's how I plan to do the final leg of all my future tris.

Haha, the only thing tender was her Achilles! She's still my biggest fan and supporter. She's been putting up with me disappearing for longs runs, etc. There were even a few when she had to come pick me up on the side of the road when the run went bad.

Yes, only tender topic was the Achilles. I will look into the race walking. Won't be going back to this ortho as I was disappointed with the speed visits he has since adopted. Mike and I had both seen this one doctor for several different things over the past and his "bedside" manner was amazing when we first met him, but guess he has gotten to big that he can barely spend any time with a patient. I felt that every time I had an appointment that I barely had a chance to ask any questions.

I have truly been a couch potato so any activity at all this month will be an improvement!

So despite 'regressing to couch potato status' as you put it, you still beat all your totals from October. That's progress my friend.

Good job on beating your last month and good luck on smashing it again this month!

I knew your seasons were a little mixed up in the southern hemisphere, but I didn't realize your months were also. I only met ONE of my October goals, swimming. As for bike and walk, I didn't even meet my September totals, much less make my October goals. Here is what I had in September and my goals.
Swim: 1h 33m 03s - 4250 Yd - New goal: 5000 yds
Bike: 3h 58m 37s - 51.96 Mi - New goal: 75 mi
Run: 7h 42m 33s - 25.09 Mi - New goal: 30 mi

What you were looking at was October totals and NOVEMBER goals.

bullfrog, nice month!

Good luck in this week's tri. You may just surprise yourself. First o ne in a long time? I wouldn't even worry about PR's at this point. I'd just focus on finishing.

I think about $150 or so. Maybe a tad lower... but not much. Long races are not cheap.

Rick, I'm not nay-saying you here, but have you looked at the percent increases you are planning there? That's a 923% increase in the pool, a 166% increase on the bike, and a 102% increase on the running. And you aren't exactly heading into the best of weather in Memphis. Speaking from experience, don't let a less than satisfactory month push you into killing yourself and taking the fun out of this training.

Just my two cents.

It seems to me that when I was looking at this earlier it was going to cost me the same as The Nation's Tri in DC, which was $199. Just looked at Nation's and it is only $120 for the Oly course, so maybe Robin ($150) is more accurate than my memory. Probably.

2/20 - Walk - 1h 18m 25s - 4.54 miles - 17m 16s /Mi

The new shoes arrived today, New Balance 1260's. The ball is definitely wider than the Saucony's. Took the laces out, re-laced them, and then tightened them around my foot as it was weighted on the stairs. I was pretty sure that I was trudging, not really getting a very good pace, but the final numbers re-affirm that I am always judging myself too harshly. After not walking in over three weeks and only two walks in the entire month of October I am satisfied with this time. Especially since I just walked in blue jeans and regular socks. No blisters yet, but a little sore where they were last time. I think the next investment is a couple of pair of quality cushioned running socks. And yes, my EIA has kicked in.

I know everyone says get fitted at a professional running shop, but I would have to drive four hours to Phillie just to find a store big enough to carry ANY selection in my size. You know the old joke about "throw the shoes away and just wear the boxes"? Well, when you wear a 13 4E you are really lucky to find a shop that has even ONE pair of shoes in your size, much less several pair to try to find that just right fit. So for now it is online trial and error.

Can't quote, so I'll try to answer from memory.

Thanks for the tips on the fees. I know I'm a month out for info, but we need to start planning now. Got home home improvements that need to be done.

Mike: I agree, that's a monster increase over last month... however (yeah, you knew it was coming, lol!)... the only real increase over a normal month is the run. I tend to swim 5k-7k yards in a normal month. I also bike 100-150mi normally, and came close to hitting 300 twice this summer. The run will double the total miles for a normal month, but in half the distance per run.

Now... if I start feeling at all bad, I'll be the first to back down. I'll complain about doing it, but it will happen if needed.

Reading an interesting book. Only three chapters in, but the basic premise is kind of contrary to the common mindset I see in triathletes. The book it titled The Well Built Triathlete and it is by Matt Dixon (former pro triathlete, coach, and owner of purplepatch fitness).

What is this radical idea? Dixon proposes that instead of doing the maximum amount of training our bodies can withstand without breaking down we should be concentrate on the minimum amount of training necessary to achieve the results we seek. It's basically traditional high-volume-low intensity vs low-volume-high-intensity.

I'll keep you posted. If you are really interested the Kindle version is $9.99 on Amazon.

Mike this is my goal for November as well. If I can pull off two each, for each of four weeks, it will really bring my mileage/duration down to manageable levels. Swims could be under 1000 yds ea, bikes could be under 10 miles each, and walks could be under 4 miles ea. Anything over that, like a 1 mile swim or a 10k walk, would simply be icing on the cake.

Well after weeks of run specific training, it felt good to get back on the bike and into the pool.

Monday - BIKE (trainer); 45min; 9.38 miles. Not a great pace, but it felt good to work out the legs a bit.
Tuesday - SWIM; 25min; 1150.00 yards. It felt good to get back in the pool AND I didn't forget how to swim!

We had a book reading group on BT for a while. This was one of the books we read. I really liked it. A lot of really good info and pretty darn good advise for those of us that want to do this for a long time and maybe have some miles on us.

3/20 - Swim - 21m 27s - 1000.00 yards - 02m 09s /100 yards
Fitness Test, kind of. 10x100 on 30s rest.

Folks tell me I swim fast, but I don't agree. Which led me to today's workout. I don't exactly have a training plan yet, I'm just kind of winging it. I did a bike and a walk already this week, so today was supposed to be a swim. I decided to test myself to see what my real time is per 100 yds. I wasn't burning up the water, but I was pushing hard enough to huff-n-puff. It didn't hurt that the fella in the next lane was swimming laps with kick fins on. I was able to stay ahead of him, I'd be darned if I was going to get passed. I suppose a 2:09 baseline is respectable, but that has GOT to be under 1:45 before the season to satisfy me.

Also don't forget that as they're non impact, you can increase biking and swimming a lot more aggressively than running. Those numbers you're looking at don't look at all unreasonable to me. And your you're prepared to back off if needed, so you seem well under control.

$150 for a Half is a bargain. The new IM Atlantic City 70.3 started at $250 for tri clubs. It goes up every 500 registrations. It's now $385 (with fees). I'm doing Atlantic City Triathlon - international in August. That was $119.

Up early today. 2 miles on the treadmill before the sun ( and family) rise. Not fast, but I got 'er done. 34 min (includes walking warm up and cool down).

Workout 3/20 for the monthly challenge.

Day one of no longer being a couch potato in the books. Yesterday, Mike got me up at the butt crack of dawn to hit the pool and it did feel good. Plan called for a measly 400 yards but ended up doing 850 in about 25 minutes. REALLY slow for me but am sure it will improve before our first race in May. Then, in place of my running workouts, I plan to walk. Mike joined me on my 10 minute walk last night which probably was more like 20 minutes.

Achilles is a bit sore this morning and will make sure to tape it before I get on my bike on the trainer and some TRX today. Lucky for me, Wednesay and Friday I don't work so I can sleep in and get my workout in without getting up before the sun.

Challenge 1/20 in the books. bring on 2/20

I can't remember what I've posted so...

11/1: 1.26mi, 14:56 (11:50 pace)
11/2: 1.22mi, 15:00 (12:20 pace)
11/3: 0.4mi, 5:34 (14:03 pace)
11/4: Rest Day, Weight 260.0 (-.5)

3/26 runs for the month. As much as I hate to count last night, it was an honest effort and keeps me on schedule.

I learned last night why I hate running even a couple of hours after dinner. I got about 4mins in and started burping (and worse). I got control after a few seconds and thought all was good. Then my stomach decided that if it couldn't go one way, it was going the other. Needless to say I stopped right there and walked home, slowly. I guess I went .8 last night, but I am keeping track of the run parts, not the walking. I thought about making it up this morning, but I'm still feeling a bit out of sorts, so scheduled rest day it is.

I have had a rocky week or so. I am NOT posting any goals, it seems I curse myself whenever I do that. I am just gonna try to get some consistency here. My HIM plan officially starts on the 16 of this month. I had hoped to have a better bases, but it is what it is. I am heading to Pensacola tomorrow to cheer on a couple of friends doing IMFL. I am taking my bike so I can at least tool around and get some miles in, also running shoes.

Keep up the good work folks.

Losing fat is not difficult. So why does this continue to be an elusive goal for so many people, who “struggle” just to lose a few inches?
