Subject: RE: 2012 Specialized SHIV Comp Rival I don't know much about the Specialized Ruby but I can tell you about the Shiv in general. I ride a 2012 Cannondale CAAD8 alloy road bike and I have a 2014 Specialized Shiv. Comparing my two bikes, here is what I can tell you.
1. Weight. The Shiv is heavier than my alloy bike, at least 3 lbs heavier. This help the Shiv remain very stable at speed and carry a lot of momentum downhill. But the Shiv is a pain to climb with.
2. Visibilty. The Shiv sits lower than my alloy bike. This improves handling and probably increases some speed.
3. Position. The Shiv takes a long time to get used to. Going from a road bike to the Shiv has a steep learning curve.
4. Stability. The Shiv feels solid as a rock rolling down the street. I never managed to remain stable using clip-on aerobars on my road bike but I don't have that problem with the Shiv.
Personally, I say it is totally worth it because the Shiv is a riot to ride. Keep your Ruby for group rides, mountain climbs and day to day riding. |
